The video game is one of the world’s leading cultural industries. Since the early 2000s, its turnover exceeds that of cinema. Yet it is rarely addressed by institutions; its playfulness often prevents it from gaining artistic status.
Of course, the medium has evolved significantly. Over the last twenty years, we have been seeing, among other things, the development of serious games, creations with pedagogical, reflexive and even political aims. Taking advantage of their potential for interactivity and experience of another reality, these games tackle complex current issues, whether individual or collective. What would you do instead of a border soldier (Papers, Please)? Are you able to lead a nation (Democracy 3)? Do you dare to come out in front of your family or friends (Coming Out Simulator)? How would you survive as a civilian in a war zone (This War of Mine)?
The GAMES AND POLITICS exhibition brings together eighteen video games created over the last fifteen years, which claim explicit political content. All are playable at ISELP. They belong to little known genres, from the documentary game to the newsgame and the anti-war game. By putting ourselves in the shoes of minority people, they allow us to change our point of view, even if we modify our conception of societal issues. Through them, the exhibition proposes to reconsider the video game as a reflection tool.
