“Sons and Mothers” brings us six portraits of the reality of family bereavement, and how this can lead us to re-examine our relationships.

Faith tells the story of the death of her infant son from leukemia and the collapse of her marriage. Hope shares the problems of being left widowed, and the struggles of bringing up a son who constantly disappoints and bewilders her, to the point where he too is taken from her in war. Charity stretches our belief, possibly, yet convinces us of her willingness to respond caringly for the man who knocked her teenage son off his bike.

Will is in his sixties. His mother is dying of cancer in hospital, and Will is desperate for some sign, some response to his questions. Billy was given up for adoption and never met his mother, but lives with the ideal that he has built for himself. William finds himself struggling with the gradual loss of his mother, the most important person in his life and waits for the final, the definitive end.

Death comes to us all, that is true, but it also comes to us through others’ passing. How we meet the challenge of these events is deeply personal, and seldom, if ever, simple. There’s just too much in the history, in the background, and in the backpack. It’s not all harsh, there are laughs too. But for some of us what we are left with is hurt, loss, and as William says “relentless frustration”.
