Every holiday season, we see a different kind of Christmas tree glittering in the middle of the Grand Place in Brussels.

The chosen tree is usually taken from the forests of Belgium’s southern region of Wallonia. Every once in a while, it comes as a gift from another country.

One particular tree became controversial because it wasn’t a real tree. In 2012, Brussels decided to go for an electronic tree installation, which was taken down much sooner because it didn’t sit so well with the public.

This year, the twinkling and towering centerpiece of Grand Place is a traditional spruce tree from the Hautes Fagnes or the High Fens, a vast nature reserve in the Liège Province.

BPS is a public interest organisation that deals with the coordination of prevention and security policies in the Brussels-Capital Region, with a particular responsibility for raising awareness on issues of insecurity.

Among its tasks is the improvement of knowledge useful to the authorities in the field of security and prevention by recording and analysing occurrences and evaluating public policies.

The survey intends to ascertain any incidents involving violations of their security they may have suffered in the past 12 months, offering members of the public an opportunity to express themselves about their feelings on current security. Identifiying all the factors of insecurity and compiling a report on anti-social behaviour, offences or non-registered crimes that took place in the region.

The goal of the survey is to establish a diagnosis leading to the implementation of actions to improve prevention and security in the region.

All information collected abides by legal provisions on privacy as well as scientific, ethical and confidentiality rules.
