The 10th of September, Brussels Environment has installed an air quality monitoring station at De Brouckère. The station – that measures in real-time the concentration of nitrogen dioxide – is on the pedestrian zone, but in a place where traffic is always present. The results are not good. In thirteen days, the European threshold of 40μg / m³ has been exceeded 9 times.

Photo: Belga/Benoît Doppagne

At certain times, the concentration is higher in the pedestrian zone than in Sainte-Catherine. This can be explained by the winds, the traffic jams or the presence of nearby sites that release nitrogen dioxide.

Brussels Environment has still to carry out a complete analysis of the measures, but at first sight, the air is not purer on the pedestrian zone. Only one exception has been registered during the free car day.

Did you know that an average person breathes about 15,000 liters of air a day. Unfortunately, the air pollutants generated by human activities are numerous. The most problematic gaseous pollutant in our city is nitrogen dioxide. In Brussels, road traffic is responsible for 69% of emissions , the rest being mainly due to heating and to a lesser extent to industry.

Brussels Mobility has put out an online calculator to measure the impact of your mobility on air quality. As such everyone can test their current modes of travel.

« To breathe better in Brussels, test the impact of your travel modes on the air quality and adapt your mobility, » writes Brussels Mobility.

Even though the tool is not scientific, in less than a day more than 3000 individuals have tried it out. At the end of the test, Brussels Mobility provides simple steps how you can improve your air quality footprint.

If you want to know if you are part of the problem or the solution, you can calculate the impact of your mobility by using this online calculator.

The European Court of Justice has ruled that air pollution is not being correctly measured in Brussels.

The supreme court of the EU in matters of European Union law has decided on the limits of air pollution in Brussels. However, according to the court, the limits need to be respected strictly at each measuring station instead of averaging the concentrations recorded at multiple stations in the region.

The judgment concludes that many zones exceed the authorized threshold of pollution in the air. It also calls for stations to be placed in areas with the highest pollution.

« We know what’s on our plate (more or less), we know what ‘s in our glass (more or less), but we don’t know what’s in the air we breathe, or very little, » claims Bruxsel’Air.

Bruxsel’Air launched a new campaign called, Les chercheurs d’air. Everyone can become an air searcher by installing a fine particle detector at home and connecting it to an online card. The data gathered will make it possible to understand the quality of the air.

In Brussels there are only 6 monitoring stations for PM10 and 5 for PM2.5. And on top of being quite imprecise, this information is difficult to access for the general public.

This lack of information is an issue for two reasons:

– Brussels citizens have the right to know the quality of the air they breathe.

– Our elected representatives also need precise data about air pollution in Brussels to better understand it and therefore combat it more efficiently.

One of the major air pollutants is fine particles. They are designated by the initials PM, for particulate matter in English. Six stations measure PM 10 concentrations in Brussels. By 2018, the WHO threshold was reached or exceeded in two-thirds of the stations. And five stations measure PM 2.5 concentrations and the WHO threshold was exceeded in all of them by 2018.

The solution requires collective action, so you can join the cause here.
