A day of action and strike is taking place today, Thursday in the federal health care sector. In Brussels, all private hospitals are concerned. Disturbances are expected due to the strike.

The action began since early in the morning. The workers are mainly gathered in the halls or at the entrance of the hospitals. However, a list of doctors and nurses are still readily available to perform certain services.

The 5 public hospitals in the capital region are not on strike, namely CHU Brugmann, Queen Fabiola Children’s University Hospital, CHU Saint-Pierre, Institut Jules Bordet and Iris Sud hospitals.

After a strike warning was filed by the Independent Railway Workers’ Union and despite holding a conciliation meeting, a strike action will disrupt rail traffic this Saturday, August 17th, reported the SNCB. The railway company also prepares a guaranteed service « to minimize the inconveniences for travelers. »

The Union denounces a recurrent lack of staff among train attendants.

For its part, the SNCB recognizes that the summer period « is not an easy period for its employees » and that it is « not always easy » for its train attendants and ticket controllers to take leave during the summer holidays.

SNCB, however, says it conducts « constructive discussions with the social partners » and is working « on concrete solutions. »

« Despite a series of concrete commitments that had already been announced, the Union nevertheless chose to use the weapon of the strike, » regretted the railway company in a statement.

The strike on August 17th, which will take place during the weekend of the Pukkelpop festival in Hasselt, is the second after a similar move by the Union during the last weekend of July.

The collection of garbage bags may be highly disturbed on Wednesday due to the general strike, reported a spokesperson for Bruxelles Propreté. Residents are asked not to take bags out on Tuesday night. All container parks in the Brussels Region will be open.

The collection of the white bags is thus postponed to Saturday, February 16th while the collection of the blue, yellow, orange and green bags is, him, postponed to Wednesday, February 20th.

The strike is not expected to affect the opening of the recy-park. All the container parks in the Brussels-Capital Region will therefore, in principle, be open to the public according to their usual schedules. The only doubt remains as to the opening on Wednesday afternoon of the container park of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, said a spokesman for Bruxelles Propreté

It is however difficult to predict the impact that the industrial action will have on its activities, as « Bruxelles-Propreté can not force its agents to declare themselves on strike beforehand. »

More than half of the flights originally scheduled for Brussels Airport on Wednesday February 13th have been canceled due to the general strike. « So far, 317 of the 569 scheduled flights have been cancelled, or 55% of total traffic, » said Brussels Airport spokeswoman, Anke Fransen.

Twenty-six airlines have canceled their flights to or from Zaventem. Around 60,000 travelers were initially expected at Brussels Airport on Wednesday.

Charleroi airport will be closed Wednesday, management for the airport announced on Monday. The airport offers the opportunity for travelers to make their arrangements and modify their plans according to the terms and conditions proposed by their airline.

The three main unions in the country (FGTB, CSC, CGSLB) called for a national strike on Wednesday after the failure of social consultation in the private sector. The unions estimate that the salary increase of 0.8% for the next two years, excluding the index, is insufficient.

Skeyes (formerly Belgocontrol), the company in charge of air traffic control in Belgium, has decided to limit air traffic capacity to 50% during trade union action (from Tuesday, February 12 at 22h to Wednesday, February 13 at 22h).

The company made this decision on the basis of the data it currently has on the workforce. « This way, safety will continue to be guaranteed, » Skeyes informed.

The FGTB is calling for massive and general mobilization on December 14th in four sectors and regions. The President of the FGTB, Robert Vertenueil, has announced a rally in front of the FEB headquarters on 14th of December.

The rally is intended to denounce « the retrograde policy of a government » in response to the new federal coalition.

In the last three years, Belgian workers lost 2.3% of purchasing power. Index jumps, low wage increases, higher excise duties, budget cuts in essential public services, such as public transport have drastically reduced household income.

On December 14, they demand:

a real negotiating margin for a wage increase in 2019 and 2020;

an AIP that provides a real increase for all workers;

an increase in the minimum wage to 14Eur / hour or 2,300 Eur / month.

A rally on the common front will be organized at 11:00 on Friday in front of the FEB headquarters, Rue Ravenstein 4 in Brussels.

In Liege and Charleroi, 24 hours of strike are already planned. Some actions will be conducted as a union common front stated the FGTB. In addition to strikes, several other initiatives have been planned such as blockades of companies, but also blockage of roads.

A trade union action within Bruxelles-Propreté on Monday disrupted the collection of bags in several Brussels Region municipalities.

According to Bruxelles-Propreté, it is mainly the municipalities of Uccle and Ixelles as well as the Marie-Christine/Bockstael and Bruxelles-Canal districts that are affected by this trade union action.

As part of a garbage collection reform, a hundred employees of the sector went on strike, said Michel Piersoul, union representative SLFP.

Last Friday initial discussions were organized with the authorities but as the workers did not feel heard, the strike was carried out.

If no agreement is reached, the strike could be prolonged in the coming days.

Hundreds of workers from Brussels’s municipalities, the CPAS and public hospitals of the IRIS network went on strike today, according to the police. More than a thousand according to the unions, have gathered Thursday morning since 10am on place Sainte-Catherine in Brussels.

They demand an increase of 10% in the salary levels, as well as a collective reduction of working time. A list of demands will be tabled with Brussels Finance Minister Guy Vanhengel and Brussels Minister-President Rudi Vervoort.

Unions are calling for an automatic raising of people from E to D-level. They also want to have a salary increase, since workers now have to work until age 67.

The reduction of the desired working time must, in their view, be accompanied by the maintenance of wages and more new hires, and a better welfare policy to improve working conditions.

The minister-president of the Brussels government Rudi Vervoort met Thursday a union delegation on the sidelines of the strike.

The baggage handler’s strike will be continued until Tuesday morning.

Management left the negotiations table at 6:30 pm to quantify union proposals. But the management negotiators did not return to discuss. At 22:30, the unions concluded that the negotiations had been interrupted. They will continue today, Monday 29th October, at 11am.

42 flights were canceled Friday morning from Brussels Airport because of a strike by baggage operator Aviapartner, said Nathalie Pierard, spokesperson for Brussels Airport.

About 24 flights on arrival were affected and the current situation is uncertain. Everything depends on the result of the negotiations between the unions and the management of Aviapartner.

Nearly 300 passengers spent the night in the airport building, reported a spokesperson. There are still some beds for passengers who want to rest but most are looking for a solution from other airlines.

The low cost airline Ryanair is particularly affected by this spontaneous strike but other companies like TAP Portugal, KLM, Air France.

Brussels Airport advises travelers to check whether their flight is handled by Aviapartner via the Brussels Airport website, to check with their airline and to travel light, ideally only with carry-on luggage.

TUI was not severely affected because it has diverted seven of its flights from Brussels to Charleroi, Liège and Rotterdam. Four other flights of the company will leave from Brussels Airport but the staff will load the luggage of the passengers. Delays are expected.

At around 5.30 pm on Thursday, the workers had already stopped loading luggage and performing maintenance on the tarmac, which has « an immediate impact for passengers, » said the spokesperson. The socialist union has justified the action of workers employed by Aviapartner — which provides handling of aircraft Ryanair and TUI — triggered by « a total lack of social consultation » within Aviapartner.

The flights of Brussels Airlines are not concerned, the Belgian company working with Swissport.

Customs officers continue with the thorough controls on Thursday at Brussels Airport to denounce the lack of personnel services that control goods and people. This causes delays of at least one hour for passengers.

This zealous strike will continue Friday, according to Marc Nijs, from the Christian Union (CSC Public Services).

NOTE: Departing passengers are not affected by these actions.

« There will be a similar action on Friday unless we suddenly receive a positive signal from the Ministry of Finance, » reported Nijs.

Similar actions are not excluded during the weekend.
