Brussels is working constantly to improve its accessibility. Many hotels, restaurants, shops, museums and attractions also offer adapted facilities so that everyone can make the most of their visit to the European capital. visit.brussels is launching the Handy Events Guide as part of the same approach and to make outdoor events in Brussels optimally suited to the needs of persons with reduced mobility.

In Brussels, like elsewhere in Belgium, more than 30% of the population is considered to be in the reduced mobility category. This percentage is increasing as the population ages. Developing tourist numbers therefore necessarily requires the development of an offering which is accessible to all. The importance of having accessible tourist sites and preparing your journey is key for a successful stay.

On a day-to-day basis, tourism stakeholders are becoming more organised and developing initiatives to make tourism more accessible to all. For many years now, visit.brussels has included persons with reduced mobility in its strategy for developing tourism in Brussels and in the organisation of these events (eat! BRUSSELS, drink! BORDEAUX, the Comic Strip Festival, etc.). This is why it is now launching a guide that provides organisers with the key information they need to make outdoor events accessible to people with reduced mobility: the Handy Events Guide.

The Handy Events Guide

To do everything it can to accommodate persons with reduced mobility during events, visit.brussels has produced a practical guide for the organisation of outdoor events accessible to this section of the population, the Handy Events Guide – The Keys to Accessible Events. This guide was created in collaboration with AMT Concept (handy.brussels) and Access-i. The guide is available free of charge online and in three languages and is a practical check-list that can be used to organise any event in a public space. It is aimed primarily at the key stakeholders in the events field, such as advertisers, organisers and events agencies as well as site managers and owners.

The guide is available in PDF format.

Other initiatives are also helping persons with reduced mobility to have an enjoyable stay. Below is a brief overview.

« be accessible be.brussels »: brochure on accessible museums and tourist attractions in Brussels
Created in partnership with the Brussels Council of Museums, Attractions & Tourisme and AMT Concept, the « be accessible be.brussels » brochure presents 50 museums and tourist attractions that are accessible to persons with reduced mobility. The activities listed in this brochure allow everyone to discover accessible locations and enjoy our museum collections in a dynamic, creative way. The brochure is free and available in four languages.

visit.brussels uses the Access-i reference for its events

This year, visit.brussels worked very hard to improve the accessibility of the eat! BRUSSELS, drink! BORDEAUX Festival and the Comic Strip Festival, which were held in September. visit.brussels obtained Access-i certification for its two events following an audit by the non- profit association Plain-Pied. Access-i provides reliable and high-quality information on the accessibility level of a building or event; persons with reduced mobility can use this information to plan their journeys with total peace of mind.

Brussels is one of Europe’s most dynamic contemporary art cities. This is due, first and foremost, to the artists living and working in the capital. But it is also down to the many venues and initiatives available in the city and, of course, those who run them: gallery owners, curators, art centre directors, collectors, etc. For this 4th edition, the Fondation pour les Arts has once again conducted an in-depth survey of the Brussels art scene and put together a guide that contains all the projects and venues that make Brussels a true hub for contemporary art.

In the first part of the guide, 10 prominent figures – including Galila Barzilaï-Hollander, Laurent Jacob and Sophie Whettnall – were interviewed and shared their feelings about contemporary art in Brussels and their favourites examples of it in the capital.

The second part of the guide presents a selection of 40 major venues (galleries, museums or art centres) chosen by these 10 figures.

Finally, the Brussels Art Guide offers an extensive address book of every location dedicated to contemporary art in Brussels as well as an agenda of exhibitions, fairs and events planned for 2020.

Practical and full of illustrations, this new edition aims to be a guide for all lovers of contemporary art, co-authored by Virginie Devillez, Sam Steverlynck, and Antoine Defeyt.

The Brussels Art Guide is also produced in collaboration with visit.brussels.

On Sunday, the Comic Strip Festival ended on a high note. More than 100,000 people attended the festival. Yet another confirmation of Brussels’ key role on the international stage of the ninth art. Next year, the event will be held at a different location.

The Comic Strip Festival brought together more than 100 exhibition stands, about 300 authors and artists, and more than 700 autograph signings. Many activities awaited visitors in the marquees installed in Brussels Park and the BOZAR rooms. The most inquisitive visitors set out to discover new horizons thanks to the dozens of foreign cultural representations that attended the International Pavilion.

A new feature this year was the school day that brought together many pupils on the Friday morning. A colourful programme had been prepared for them. From an introduction to scenarios to a workshop against racism with Lilian Thuram, including the discovery of the history of the Second World War in the company of the author of « Children of the Resistance », many original activities were offered to them.

The result of the collaboration between Editions du Lombard and visit.brussels, the « Children of the Resistance » exhibition was a huge hit. It quite literally immersed visitors into the world of comic strips and taught them about the context of the time and the challenges faced by the Resistance movement in an entertaining manner.

The public was also able to learn more about the legendary pair Blake and Mortimer during a special conference in the company of the series’ various contributors. A unique opportunity to mention the work of Edgar P. Jacobs and the influence it still has today on his peers.

On Sunday, visitors were dazzled by the Balloon’s Day Parade and its 15 giant balloons. It made its way around the streets of the capital for about two hours. The new Toto balloon joined the procession before the eyes of an enthralled public.

Finally, the ninth art literally took over the capital and immersed visitors in the most beautiful comic strip boards. Guided tours allowed enthusiasts to discover comic strip frescoes and other sites scattered around the capital. From the Belgian Comic Strip Center to the Autrique House, including Muntpunt, several key sites in Brussels also took part in the event offering original exhibitions to fans.

visit.brussels, the event’s organiser, also announced that the event would be moving in 2020 to the brand-new site of the Gare Maritime of Tour & Taxis. The aim of the Region is double: on the one hand to alleviate pressure on the city centre and better distribute the events offering around the entire Brussels region, and on the other hand, to make the most of a neighbourhood undergoing great change along the canal, a short walk from another strategic regional project: KANAL – Centre Pompidou.

The Brussels Tourist Office will set up two of its main events in this new Brussels gem: the Comic Strip Festival and the gastronomic festival eat! BRUSSELS drink! BORDEAUX, which welcomes more than 200,000 visitors a year.

The next edition of the Comic Strip Festival that will be full of surprises will take place from 11 to 13 September 2020 at the Gare Maritime on the Tour & Taxis site.

The comic strip is a fully-fledged art form and the Belgian comic book tradition has all the qualities required to compete on the world stage. That is indisputable. Put your album down for a moment and go looking for your favourite characters, by all accounts larger than life, on one of the 60 or so comic strip walls dotted around Brussels.

Since the early 90s, the City of Brussels has been systematically removing the loudmouth advertising brochures forming a blot on the city centre. But what they left behind was dilapidated walls that were in urgent need of restoration. The first fresco, of Broussaille by the Brussels strip cartoonist Frank Pé, appeared on one of these in 1991, on the Rue du Marché au Charbon. A nice initiative, reconciling art and urban restoration with one another. Brussels attaches great importance to the rich and varied Belgian-French comic strip tradition.

As the years went by, all manner of famous characters have earned a prominent place in the city landscape of Brussels, such as Tintin, Nero, Spike and Suzy, FC De Kampioenen, Jommeke, Kiekeboe, Blake & Mortimer, Gaston Lagaffe, Tiny, Billy & Buddy, Lucky Luke, Spirou, Asterix, Quick and Flupke, and the Smurfs. Young drawing talent both from home and abroad, as well as less classical forms such as gag strips and graphic novels, have also made an appearance. Over time, almost 60 comic strip walls have been added to brighten up the city centre and the district of Laeken, and another eight are to follow over the next two years in the borough of Haren.

The residents of Haren will be given a say over the themes. Curious as to which scenes they will suggest along with the authors to put their neighbourhood in the spotlight?

The Balloons’ Day Parade, taking place during the Comic Strip Festival, will run for the 17th consecutive year across the major Brussels streets on September 15, 2019. Composed of famous characters of Belgian comic strip and rhythmed by Belgian fanfares, the Balloons’ Day Parade will have the pleasure to make discover to young and old its gargantuesque balloons.

Sunday, September 15, during 1 hour and 30 minutes, a parade of giant balloons in the form of comic characters, will cross the city center of the capital. The aim of the Balloons’ Day Parade and the Comic Strip Festival is to immerse fans and enthusiasts in the fantastic world of Belgian comics.

This year it is not one but two new balloons that will integrate the parade, Toto, the most famous kid for classic jokes of French culture and Dooly the Little Dinosaur. It is also with pleasure that the penguins of Madagascar will make their comeback for this 2019 edition.

The impressive inflating balloon show will start around 10:00 am on the Place des Palais where more than 200 volunteers will be needed to give life to these giants. Most of the balloons will cross the Atlantic to participate at this event. From 15:00, Billy, Spirou, Tintin, The Cat and their new friends will walk in the city center to finally return to the Place des Palais around 16:30.

This year, the parade will welcome new fanfares from all over Belgium, the fanfares are placed between the balloons to give a rhythm and animate the parade.

The comic strip lovers will also find satisfaction in the Royal Park in the Comic Strip Village where new and used comic books will be put on sale by publishers and booksellers. More than hundred authors will give signing sessions and there are many other surprises and animations during three days.

To lead the balloons, the Balloons’ Day Parade is currently looking for volunteers to inte- grate the parade from 13:45 to 18:00. If want to do it, do not hesitate to send your information to the email address: gold@beegroupe.be

Continuing our tour of the Midi area of Brussels, via Pensions Tower and Cantillon Brewery, today we head ten minutes north-west to Abattoir.

Brussels has a reputation for poor urban decision-making. The destruction of Horta’s Maison du Peuple or Ixelles’s Halles for example, still cause locals to facepalm in anguish. But sometimes the planners get it right.

The Anderlecht Abattoir was built in 1888 to replace its festering predecessor. The new site would be better connected to the canal and rail infrastructure. A branch of the Senne was redirected, the swampy terrain was drained and four-metre vaulted foundations were dug. The vaults become an ice-cellar and mushroom farm (and these days are available for venue-hire). Above sprouted a hundred cast iron columns supporting the vast metal roof of the 400sq metre markethall, designed by Emile Tirou.

At the gate, visitors are greeted by two cast bronze bulls, copies of those at the Vaugirard Abattoir in Paris (now the Parc Georges Brassins). Inside, in the shade of the roof, daylight is carved into horizontal bands and ornate arches.

This is not only an impressive part of agro-food history, but an exciting part of the city’s future. A hundred years after its construction, the site was sold to a cooperative and listed as a classified monument in 1988. It has gone from strength to strength. 200,000 animals a year are still slaughtered here and there are multiple thriving ‘mets’ (‘met’ is the old Brussels dialect for market) including a Sunday flea market, Brocantemet. Complementing its older mistress, a new Foodmet was recently added, housed in a pre-cast concrete pavilion which was exhibited at the Venice Biennale 2016, with cutaway panels resembling a child’s shape sorting game.

And throughout the summer, from 6pm on a Thursday night, Abattoir becomes the venue for one of Brussels’s most surprising afterwork parties. The Boeremet. Lined with foodstalls serving pizza, thai noodles, dim sum, burgers, nibbles and shots, chips (of course) and plenty more, the marketplace is taken over by a massive sound system pumping out popular club floorfillers. By 8pm, enthusiastic semi-clad punters are dancing on the tables.

From this summer onwards, people who visit the European capital will be able to explore the “real” Brussels. This is because visit.brussels has developed an online, free guide in real time: “now.brussels”, a unique opportunity to discover “the Brussels of the people who actually live there”.

As well as all its traditional and iconic attractions, Brussels is packed full of typical spots and secret treasures loved by its inhabitants. That’s why visit.brussels, in collaboration with the creative agency FamousGrey, has developed an innovative online guide that’s available in real time: “now.brussels”.

Now.brussels, a new tool in real time to discover Brussels in a different way

When you’re exploring a city, there’s no better way than to visit the places the people who live there like. Thanks to now.brussels, this is now possible with a click. Now.brussels is an innovative site that lets visitors choose what they want to do based on where they are, the weather forecast, what they fancy doing at that time and, above all, the recommendations of locals.

What are the most popular open-air cafes with the locals? Where can you party until the small hours in Brussels? What are the not-to-be-missed events? Brussels’ hotspots are rated in real time, based on what locals are saying on social media (through photos, stories, comments, hashtags…) and their location.

How does it work?

All the user has to do is visit now.brussels and turn on their location, and the Brussels adventure can begin. They can choose from three options: things to do, where to drink, and where to eat. Based on the user’s geolocation and what they choose to do, the site uses an interactive map to identify where locals are at that precise time. According to their size and shade, coloured areas identify the places most visited by locals, which are both near the visitor and located in the Brussels region. The visitor then just has to decide what to do, based on the descriptions and photos uploaded about each place and/or activity.

An authentic “made in Brussels” experience

After visiting the city’s historical highlights, tourists will be able to enjoy the atmosphere and buzz of the “real” Brussels. Exploring Brussels with now.brussels is a unique way to be inspired and guided by locals, as well as to discover Brussels in real time at the same pace as locals.

The International Greeters Association, a symbol of participative tourism, has been created and its headquarters are in Brussels.

Now in its 26th year, the Global Greeter Network is going from strength to strength. And what better way to visit a city than accompanied by a local? As a symbol of this boom, the International Greeters Association has been created and its headquarters are in Brussels.

Greeters are local people who give tourists an unusual, original and personal insight into their city or neighbourhood, in a friendly and welcoming way. This idea is a perfect example of the trend in alternative tourism, which is increasingly in demand from tourists looking for a more authentic experience. It represents participative tourism, a vehicle for urban development and a cornerstone of tourist growth at the start of the 21st century.

The Global Greeter Network has more than 140 members in all 4 corners of the globe. Brussels can boast about being one of the 6 Global Greeter destinations to have seen the biggest rise in visits, along with Paris, New York, Chicago, Brisbane and Hamburg.

Today, Brussels Greeters and visit.brussels are delighted to announce the creation of the International Greeter Association (IGA). The Brussels Greeters network is a free, participative tourism service, that relies on the volunteering work and enthusiasm of the people of Brussels. Coordinated by visit.brussels, its mission is to welcome and help visitors discover the city. The creation of the IGA in Brussels confirms the capital’s international standing and further boosts its active approach to local partnerships.

Visit.brussels (and the Brussels Greeters), CDT Pas-de-Calais, Hamburg Greeters, Cicerones of Buenos Aires, Paris Greeters and Choose Chicago are the founding members, who will soon bring the 140 existing networks together. The global network is expected to grow by 5% in the next two years.

Brussels, world capital of international associations, with more than 2,300 based in the city will, from now on, also be a leader in participative tourism.

This year, more than 100,000 people have taken part in the Belgian Pride Parade. The capital’s streets have been filled with rainbow colours. It’s the paraders’ chance to share their message and put forward their demands, in a joyful and relaxed way.

For several days, life in the centre of this European capital has not only been flowing with numerous socio-cultural activities, but also the Belgian Pride Festival’s celebratory and militant events. Theatre, cinema, literature, workshops, performances, exhibitions, conferences…the creativity and militancy of the LGBTI+ communities have taken over Brussels and brought a buzz to all these venues. This year the Pride Festival’s slogan is #AllforOne, a reminder that it is a unified and intersectional battle.

Belgian Pride also gives intellectual, militant and civic initiatives an opportunity to assert the community’s demands and revive avenues for political reflection. This year’s theme is “intersectionality”. It’s the chance for the three regional organisations of the Belgian LBGTI+ associations – RainbowHouse Brussels, Arc-en-Ciel Wallonia and çavaria – to engage political candidates on the issue of respecting diversity every day, in the run-up to the elections.

But the festivities aren’t coming to an end just yet. In several parts of town, they’ll go on until the early hours of tomorrow. From the Pride Village on Mont des Arts, to the street parties and performances in the Rainbow Village, via numerous parties in honour of the diverse LGBTI+ scene, it’s impossible to miss Belgian Pride Brussels 2019.

Brussels is delighted to welcome Belgian Pride for the 24th consecutive year. visit.brussels has supported the event since 2012; not only do they give the event logistical support, but they also guarantee the safety of its participants. visit.brussels is showing its support for this now unmissable event which kicks off the European Pride season. During Belgian Pride 2018, no fewer than 55,000 people stayed in the capital.
