On Friday morning, the Interior Federal Public Service has declared the yellow alert in Belgium, in anticipation of the storms and heavy rain announced by the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM). Thus, it has been activated a non-emergency hotline, at the number 1722.

Since this number is intended for non-emergency interventions, it has to be called only « when no life is not potentially in danger, but the intervention of firefighters is necessary », recalls the Interior SPF in a statement. The hotline has been activated in order to keep the emergency fire and police numbers free for those who need medical or urgent assistance.

So, when a life is in danger, the reference number it has always to be called number 112.

According to the IRM, on Friday morning the weather will be very cloudy with a risk of thunderstorms. The yellow alert has been activated as wind gusts could reach 70 kilometers per hour.

The weather today (Monday) in Belgium will be slightly cooler than it was over the weekend, with some parts of the country facing the possibility of brief showers, Belgium’s Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) has announced.

The weather is likely to be quite cloudy during the first part of the day, with the possibility of some scattered showers occurring over the south of the country. Temperatures will not exceed 19° in the seaside and 24° in the Kempen and Gaume. The wind will be moderate, and will be coming in from the west and northwest.

During the night, cloud cover will vary across the country: heavier cloud cover is expected in the central and northern parts of the country. However, the weather should remain dry. The minimum temperature will be 9° in the Hautes Fagnes to 16° by the sea. The wind will be light and will be coming in from the north and northeast.

The rest of the week will be dry with occasional sunshine. Temperatures should remain around the low-to-mid twenties range.

Brussels Environment has decided to close its parks as of Tuesday 9pm due to the possibility of strong storms. An update will be made this Wednesday around noon.

The Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (RMI) is also issuing a yellow warning across all of Belgium for storms that could break out on Wednesday. In Brussels, this warning period extends from 6am to midnight.

Although some thunderstorms may occur in isolation this Tuesday, it is primarily from Wednesday morning until evening that more structured and widespread thunderstorms are forecast; these may in turn be accompanied by heavy rainfall and strong gales. Hail is also possible, the RMI reports on its website.

January in our lovely city can be pretty grey and wet, it can feel like a long month for those people who suffer from the lack of daylight.

Seasonal Affected Disorder (SAD) or the less severe ‘winter blues’ effect up to one in eight people in northern Europe. SAD is a type of depression in which a lack of light is thought to affect the part of the brain that rules sleep, appetite, sex drive, mood and activity levels. Patients experience lethargy and a craving for sugary snacks.

If you think that you have SAD then you may wish to seek medical advice, however if it is the winter blues then maybe there are a few things that can help you at home.

Did you know that what we eat every day actually affects that super important chemical Serotonin. Serotonin is one of the major mood neurotransmitters in our brains. Simply put, when serotonin levels are low, we’re more depressed, and when they’re high, we’re happier. We get Serotonin from light but also from other sources.

80 to 90 percent of the human body’s total serotonin is found in specialized cells in our guts, not in our brains!

Therefore it is really important to be eating the serotonin we need. The highest concentrations of Serotonin are found in:

walnuts

plantains

pineapples

bananas

kiwis

plums

tomatoes

So on a rainy day, why not treat yourself to lots of wonderful, colourful fruit and vegetables. Don’t just concentrate on the list above – eat a big variety!

There is a cocktail effect in combining vegetables and fruits which is even more than the sum of the benefits of each individual vegetable.

So go on… let the sun shine in!
