The Brussels minister for mobility is aiming to renovate Schuman square.

What would the EU neighbourhood look like if there were no cars? While millions of cars pass through the district every week and month, making the air quality very bad, this situation might well soon change.

Pascal Smet, the Brussels minister for mobility, would like to make a part of Schuman square pedestrian-friendly. “Schuman is one of the most emblematic places in Brussels and in Belgium, a business card […]. It is also the deadest and ugliest square,” he said.

How would this change be brought about? First of all, Cortenbergh Avenue would only have two lanes (instead of three lanes, as it does today) for cars, and the third lane would be used only by buses. Then, Schuman square itself would only have two lanes, one towards Rue de la Loi and the other one only for buses. The extension of Rue de la Loi (between Schuman and Cinquantenaire) would be fully pedestrian, and no cars would be able to use the lanes at the end of Rue Froissart and Auderghem Avenue.

And finally, in the middle of the square, a massive canopy would be set up, which would be decorated with greenery.

The works for such a purpose would cost about €8 million. The different Brussels authorities would also coordinate with each other in order to make this project successful. However, the project would likely only be completed in several years’ time.

Lesbroussart street (between the Bailli and Flagey stops) is getting a facelift during the months of July and August.

Sidewalks, trees, roads and road surfaces are being renovated, as are the tram track- the tracks are over 25 years old. The tracks see many trams of the line 81 cross over them and 25 years means they are due for a replacement.

These works will interrupt tram line 81 from Saturday, June 30th to Friday, August 31st, and the detour of bus line 54 to Forest Center (Bervoets) from Sunday, July 8th to Friday, August 31st.

This weekend, the Leopold II tunnel – which links the tunnels of the inner ring around Brussels to the approaches to the motorway at Groot-Bijgaarden – will entirely close for two full months. The closure is expected to cause serious disruption to traffic in and out of the city despite being planned for the summer holiday period.

The tunnel has in recent years been in a dilapidated physical condition and so the works on the tunnel will take place during the summer months of 2018, 2019, and 2020 and will last 39 months. The works will include everything from structure, ventilation, emergency exits to the removal of asbestos.

The Leopold II tunnel sees some 80,000 car passengers a day, coming from East and West Flanders to work in Brussels, and then departing later for home. There are alternatives on offer for those who use the tunnel:

Public transport authority STIB will increase service between Rogier – at the beginning of the tunnel – to Simonis – at the entrance to the Elisabeth Park. Further services carry on to the end of the tunnel at the start of Avenue Charles-Quint. STIB is also providing a parking lot at the Heysel complex, with a link to the metro into the city, free between 0630 and 2200.
