He’s world famous for his wonderful films but Woody Allen also has another string to his bow – he’s a remarkably talented musician. Now a Belgian audience is set to get a rare glimpse of his less well-known talent when Allen, accompanied by the Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band, kick off their European tour with an exclusive concert in Brussels.

On Saturday, June 22 at BOZAR, the famous director, who is also a clarinetist, will be on stage with musical director Eddy Davis and his band. It will be the first time in 10 years that Allen has performed in Belgium on the clarinet. This all-too-rare concert is part of a European tour he is undertaking this spring and summer. Other dates later this year include Amsterdam on June 24, Munich on June 26 and Milan on June 28.

The show, brought to this country by the leading Belgian promoter Greenhouse Talent, will be improvised each night with no firm set list as always and will comprise a diverse collection of early twentieth century tunes, hymns, blues and rag, drawing inspiration from a range of artists, including legendary performers such as Sidney Bechet, George Lewis, Johnny Dodds, Jimmie Noone and Louis Armstrong.

It has been 36 years since Allen and his New Orleans Jazz Band, led by musical director Eddy Davis, have been delighting audiences with a unique mix of New Orleans inspired music. It is no less than 23 years since their very first European tour in 1996, where they played 19 concerts in 21 days.

This was captured for the much-acclaimed documentary “Wild Man Sings the Blues’”, which was filmed by Oscar-winning director, Katherine Bigelow, who shadowed Woody and the band throughout the tour.

Allen and the band also play regularly to sell-out houses at The Café Carlyle in New York, which is famed for its musical heritage. For years, every Monday night Allen has played clarinet with the same band on the ground floor of the legendary Carlyle.

The American director, writer, actor, and comedian’s career spans more than six decades. He began his career as a comedy writer in the 1950s, writing jokes and scripts for television and publishing several books of short humour pieces.

After contemporary art, contemporary dance and the circus arts, it’s now the turn of Brussel’s jazz scene to put the spotlight on the creative talent in our capital.

“In recent years, more and more jazz bands have been emerging in Brussels. A thriving scene made up of young talents such as Antoine Pierre, Jean-Paul Estiévenart, Melanie De Biasio and Esinam Dogbatse coupled with leading figures such as Aka Moon or Philip Catherine illustrates the creativity and mix on show in Brussels. Not to mention the legend of Brussels jazz, Toots Thielemans who put Brussels on the map with his contributions on several legendary albums by great American stars. Edinburgh, a city known internationally for its cultural life and Jazz Festival, which welcomes thousands of visitors every year, has a large network of venues and partners in the area, which will allow our artists to perform in prestigious locations, have the pleasure of playing with Scottish musicians and broaden their audience,” Rachid Madrane, Minister of Promotion of Brussels at the Wallonia-Brussels Federation

For this 4th edition, the spirit remains the same, to make Brussels shine by highlighting its artists. Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival is renowned for featuring extraordinary musicians based on their outstanding performances, rather than their name recognition in Scotland. As they survey the jazz world, they are amazed by the quality of some European jazz scenes, and it’s a thrill to offer a very special snapshot of one of the most exciting places for jazz in 2019: Brussels.

Belgium has played a key role in jazz history. The iconic jazz instrument, the saxophone, was created by a Belgian – Adolphe Sax – and Django Reinhardt, the Belgian guitarist, was the first non-American, to be a major international jazz star and to almost single-handedly created a European jazz style – gypsy swing – that endures to this day. There have been many Brussels jazz greats, from Phillip Catherine to Toots Thielemans, but nothing to match the current crop of brilliant musicians.

From Thursday 7 February to Saturday 9 February 2019, Thrill presents twelve concerts that highlight the best of the new Brussels jazz scene in some iconic Edinburgh venues: The Queen’s Hall, The Jazz Bar, St Brides Centre and on the High Street.

Thrill kicks off in the Queen’s Hall with a celebration of the music made famous by the Belgian gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt with a thrilling five-star international Gypsy Swing double bill featuring Les Violons de Bruxelles + Rose Room. Led by violin superstar Tcha Limberger, Les Violons de Bruxelles are an all-string swing orchestra playing gypsy music with virtuosity, verve and panache. Fronted by Seonaid Aitken, Rose Room, re-create the excitement of Rive Gauche Paris where Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli set alight the jazz clubs of the 1930s and 40s.

The programme at St Brides also includes double headers, with STRATA + Antoine Pierre URBEX, two young bands at the forefront of the new jazz scenes in Belgium and Scotland. On Saturday, saxophonist Toine Thys Trio, featuring guest guitarist Hervé Samb, are paired with leading Scottish group Colin Steele Quintet. Later Brussels jazz legends, Aka Moon, feature opposite Laura MacDonald’s History of Sax.

The Jazz Bar programme kicks off with a Scottish/Belgian Sextet featuring three musicians from each country: the Thrill Sextet play in double bill followed by Mâäk quintet. Piano jazz features with Oriental Jazz Project + Martin Salemi Trio. ESINAM delivers hypnotic, dance-floor beats with a spiritual jazz feel. Brandhaard and Echoes of Zoo deliver exciting contemporary jazz, one with a New York feel, one with eclectic influences.

The High Street is the setting for an extraordinary outdoor performance on Saturday 9 February. Thrill the City features steaming gnaoua drums. Moroccan percussionists and red-hot saxophones will create a carnival of rhythms. The three performances are free and last 20 minutes.

When Toots Thielemans turned ninety in 2012, a select group of artists paid him tribute at the Lincoln Center in New York City. Pianists Kenny Werner and Herbie Hancock took turns to accompany the legendary Belgian master; Brazilian singers Dori Caymmi and Eliane Elias shared the stage with the man they had revered since childhood.

On Tuesday, January 23rd, 2018, the Marni Theater in Brussels hosted a 50th birthday celebration of another remarkable Belgian jazz figure: Anne Wolf. Born in Brussels to a father who loved painting, and a pianist mother who loved Chopin, Wolf joined the Royal Conservatory of Music in 1985. A master class in Paris with the exceptional Michel Petrucciani changed her life forever.

“It’s a pleasure to share this evening with you, and with musicians who are close to my heart,” said Wolf at the start of the evening. The concert was one of the headlines of the River Jazz festival, jointly organised by three institutions who care a great deal about the promotion of jazz music in Brussels: Senghor Cultural Center, Jazz Station, and the Marni Theater. Its fourth edition, the festival runs from 12th until the 27th of January and is hosting world-known musicians and bands like Richard Galliano, Marc Ribot, the Steve Houben quartet; Yves Teicher and Fabian Fiorini, among others. With concerts for kids, conferences and exhibitions, the festival had an activity for everyone.

“This is a composition inspired by the three kids I met in Gambia,” said Wolf, introducing one of the first pieces where she shared the stage with bassist Theo De Jong, singer Magda Mendes, percussionist and flutist Esinam Dogbatse, and drummer Lionel Beuvens. Mendes captivated the audience with her soft, melancholic skat-singing, reminiscent perhaps of a distant sunset in her native Portugal. Dogbatse is a multifaceted artist, one moment playing the drums, the next one beguiling the crowd with the delicate, whisper of her flute.

In front of a full-house theatre, Wolf performed a set of compositions that varied in style and rhythm: blues, sambinhas, bossanovas, smooth jazz, and French chanson too. Then she left the stage and found a seat amid the audience, ceded her place at the piano to another great Belgian musician, Nathalie Loriers, who delighted the audience with compositions by Wolf, but also by Belgian composer Pierre van Dormael.

Long-time friend Bo Waterschoot performed a heart-rending bass duet with Theo De Jong where Waterschoot displayed the mastery she holds over her instrument. High and low notes, quick or prolonged, Waterschoot knew how. After Loriers, in came pianist Ivan Paduart, who greeted Wolf somewhere in the distance, then sat down and began to pay his tribute.

In a handful of pieces, Philippe Decock played the harmonica and knocked out the audience. Averting his eyes, introvert, almost self-effacing, he accompanied Mendes voice, or Dogbatse’s flute, or simply improvised a blue, melodic line that seemed to come from the depths of his heart. At the end, all the musicians gathered on stage and bowed, then Wolf played one last piece before thanking the audience and saying good night.

The River Jazz Festival ends on Saturday with the Tuur Florizoone trio at Jazz Sation; Nowhere at Senghor; and Psül at Marni Theater.

In 1819 Ludwig van Beethoven sat at his desk and began to compose one of the most loved pieces of his repertoire: the Diabelli Variations. Originally conceived after a request from the Viennese publisher, Anton Diabelli, to compose a single variation on a melody, it would take Beethoven four years to finish the entire piece: thirty three variations for piano. By that time, he’d also be at work on a complex orchestral piece, the Ninth Symphony. He was forty eight.

At sixty two, Uri Caine has come to Brussels to delight the audience, with Beethoven’s music, but also with Jazz. On Thursday January 18th, the American pianist and composer performed at Flagey accompanied by the Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by Alexander Hanson. The concert was one of the headlines of the Brussels Jazz Festival at Flagey, which is taking place from the 11th until the 20th of January. The festival has received jazz artists and bands such as the Enrico Rava Tribe, Soweto Kinch, Tony Allen, Mâäk, and many more.

Wearing loose, black clothes and rimless glasses, Caine met the audience at Flagey’s studio four. With an untucked shirt he sat behind the grand piano and began to play the theme of the Diabelli’s variations with virtuosity. The first half of the program consisted of the Diabelli Variations for Chamber Orchestra and improvised Piano solo, a piece Caine composed in 2001. Throughout the performance there were segments that resembled Beethoven’s composition, but also moments of ragtime jazz, smooth passages with string instruments, as well as the first few notes of the Moonlight Sonata. Caine seemed to be enjoying himself while performing his own composition, which included instances when he slapped the side of the piano, clapped, and even sneezed.

The second part of the concert included the piece commissioned by Flagey and De Bijloke, specifically for this event. The world premiere of Agent Orange included the performances by jazz master Dave Liebman on the saxophone, John Hebert on the double bass, and DJ Olive at the mixing table. The composition, which in its title includes a veiled reference to the US president, has a rich percussive element, with three musicians at the back of the stage busy shifting from one percussion instrument to the next. At different points one can hear the sounds of a woman laughing, a baby babbling, or a man groaning, going on for a while, then fading away. But the gift of the night was Liebman’s performance, whose soprano saxophone filled the hall with its amazing, delicate sounds.

On Friday the 19th, Kurt Rosenwinkel’s Bandit 65 will perform at 21:00, while Matthew Herbert’s Brexit Big Band and Choir will delight the audience on Saturday night.

« Philip Catherine is one of the last romantic jazz musicians. He does not play music: he is music. A lyricism to crack the unconscious. Music, music, sometimes with those tunes of simplicity that makes you believe that nothing is easier than to observe a photon in its race. The great art. » said Francis Marmande from Le Monde.

This is the man Flagey will pay tribute on the occasion of its 75th anniversary. Philip Catherine will celebrate its birthday this Friday surrounded by great jazz musicians such as Bert Van den Brink or Nicola Andrioli. It will be a multitasking evening for Catherine as he will play in duo, trio, quartet and even quintet.

Philip Catherine is not a Bruxellois de pure souche but he became one. He was born in London back in 1942, of a Belgian father and an English mother, and moved to Brussels when he was only 6-years old.

Catherine started on guitar in his teens, and by seventeen he was performing professionally at local venues. He released his debut album, Steam, in 1970. During the next few years, he studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, with Mick Goodrick and George Russell. In 1976, he and the guitarist Larry Coryell recorded and toured as an acoustic duo. The following year he recorded with Charles Mingus, who dubbed him « Young Django ». He has performed all over Europe as well as he received many awards, such as the Django d’Or” in 1998 (Paris), the “Maestro Honoris Causa” in 2002 (Antwerp Conservatory) and the “Best International Guitarist” in 2016 (Hamburg). Philippe Catherine released more than 20 albums.
