Hungarian Júlia Pusker among the 71 talented young violinists admitted to the 2019 Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition!

Of the 172 candidates whose videos have been screened, 71 have been admitted to the first public round of this 19th violin session. We count no less than 49 women and 22 men, representing 20 nationalities in total.

The candidates, aged between 18 and 30 years old, are on the eve of their career as professional musicians. For each one of them, the Queen Elisabeth Competition aims to be a springboard to an international career. Thanks to an unprecedented attention of both the public and the media in Belgium, but also far beyond, all candidates can reach a very large audience.

An ever-prestigious jury will select the artists who will share a total of EUR 128.500 in prize money. The first laureate will have the honour to play the ‘Huggins’ 1708 Stradivarius for four years, presented by the Nippon Music Foundation at the prize ceremony at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel.

At Flagey

In the first public round (29 April to 4 May) the candidates each give a recital, solo or accompanied by piano. The semi-final (6 tot 11 May) includes a concerto by Mozart, accompanied by the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie and Jean-Jacques Kantorow, and a recital in which the 24 semi-finalists perform the compulsory work written this year by Belgian composer Bram Van Camp.

At the Brussels Centre for Fine Arts (Bozar)

Before the final (20 to 25 May), the 12 finalists will move to the seclusion of the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, where they will have a week to study, without outside assistance, a compulsory work specially composed for this competition by Finnish composer Kimmo Hakola. In the final, each will play the imposed piece, as well as a major concerto of their choice, in which they are accompanied by the Belgian National Orchestra under the baton of its music director Hugh Wolff.
