Belgian Athlete Nina Derwael remains world champion
Already crowned uneven bars world champion in Doha last year, the 19-year-old athlete from Limburg defended her title at the World Championships in Stuttgart and has won the gold medal for the second time.
Having led the Belgian team to qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Nina Derwael gave a flawless performance. She notched up a score of 15.233, beating her opponents Rebecca Downie (UK) and Sunisa Lee (US).
The young Limburg native then achieved all the goals she had set for the World Championships, and also accomplished a personal challenge – vanquishing the painful memory of her fall in June at the European Games in Minsk.
A two-time European champion and now two-time world champion, Nina Derwael has become the benchmark on uneven bars, the target that other athletes dream of beating.
A benchmark who knows how to look after herself, deciding to forgo participation in the floor exercise finals in order to focus on training for the Olympics in Tokyo, where going after gold is her top priority. And we wish her the very best of luck!
