In their continuous effort to present the most relevant and innovative new filmmakers to you, Cinematek collaborated this year with the international film festival Punto de Vista which takes place each year in Pamplona, Navarra. Since 2005, this has become one of the best documentary festivals in Europe.

CINEMATEK’s tribute is a sample of the 2018 edition of the festival that, under the artistic direction of Garbiñe Ortega. Punto de Vista has always been considered as a rendez-vous of the avantgarde, trying to find connections that otherwise could go unnoticed, approaching non-fiction in an expanded and free way.
The reputation and history of the festival Punto de Vista, its audacious and generous way of programing, far away from the more convenient routes is the perfect echo of CINEMATEK’s focus on what is avant-garde today.

This Brussels event is composed of four programmes showing a selection of the official competition of 2018 (including numerous awarded films and the last films by international artists Jorge Jácome, Kevin Jerome Everson, Deborah Stratman, Rosalind Nashashibi, Jonathas de Andrade ), and special screenings.

Âge d’Or regulars and experimental film lovers will especially appreciate Garbiñe Ortega’s Correspondences: Films as Letters. Note also Jose Luis Carrasco’s portrait of Tesa Arranz, key figure in La Movida Madrileña; the mysterious Mexican collectif Los Ingrávidos and other artistic activists belit sağ and HIWA K in the two programs New Resistances Post 68Placing the Body presents works by five female filmmakers and Echoes of Silence, the rarely seen masterpiece by Peter Emmanuel Goldman closes off the three day festival.

In the presence of Marina Lameiro and Garbiñe Ortega (Artistic Director of Punto de Vista,Pamplona)

Marina Lameiro presents her social circle with the sincerity and intimacy that you often find in conversations with friends:  a dancer has started looking for a more profitable job, the tattooed singer of techno duo Platiblond Extreme goes to raves, as well as on excursions to the countryside,  a mother and her child return to her family home…. a many-sided portrait of a generation accused of being reluctant to grow up and forced to give up their dreams in order to survive. (Punto de Vista Public Prize 2018).

26 RUE SAINT-FARGEAU
MARGAUX GUILLEMARD

I USED TO SLEEP ON THE ROOFTOP
ANGIE OBEID
LB & QA 2017 / DCP / 61’ / V: ARABIC / subtitles: EN

In the presence of Angie Obeid,  Margaux Guillemard and Marta Selva(Co-Director of Mostra Internacional de Films de Dones, Barcelona)

Angie Obied, who is currently working and living in Brussels, presents her documentary on how she has welcomed Nuhad, a 53-year-old Syrian woman, who decided in 2015 to leave Damascus, to her home in Beirut. In this huis-clos, Angie observes the older lady and finds intersections between her own life and Nuhad’s: they both are vainly trying to move out of their own walls to find the right place to exist in.

Margaux Guillemard is a Franco-Tunisian director, film teacher and author. She is currently working as an artistic collaborator with Mia Engberg (Dirty DiariesBelleville Baby), with whom she is currently developing both a fiction feature film together with an artistic-academic research book on the idea of “Visual Silence in films”. Her film 26 rue Saint-Fargeau is a vertical journey through a 300-flats Parisian social estate, discreetly traveling through the inside of the apartments, a tender dialogue between the different floors, cultures, atmospheres, tastes for furniture and ways of thinking inhabiting the building.

FIESTA FOREVER
JORGE JÁCOME
FR 2016 / DCP / 20’ / V: PT / subtitles: EN

Jorge Jácome comes to present us one of the most delightful hybrids of documentary and fiction: Flores explores the effects on Portugal’s Azores islands of the hydrangea invasion that forced all inhabitants (except a neo-colonial French hydrangea laboratory) into exile on the mainland. Seen through the eyes of the narrator and two young soldiers working on the island whom he befriends, Flores creates a surreal and tender romance that comments on real issues of economic migration, national and regional identity and cultural loss.

The screening is combined with his earlier work Fiesta Forever and films by Deborah Stratman and Kevin Jerome Everson.
