At the occasion of the reopening of the Royal Museum for Central Africa on 9th of December 2018, BOZAR will host events that will focus on the renovation, the new vision of the Museum and the question of Belgium’s colonial memory. Documentaries and debates will specifically address the complexity of the renovation, the role of this new museum in Belgium and the world, and the opportunity that this reopening gives Belgian institutions and citizens to rethink their relationship with Africa and to decolonize practices and minds.

18:00 Ce Magnifique Gateau ! Emma de Swaef, Marc James Roels (BE, 2018)

‘Ce Magnifique Gâteau !’ is an animated anthology film set in colonial Africa in the late 19th century. It tells the stories of 5 different characters: a troubled king, a middle-aged Pygmy working in a luxury hotel, a failed businessman on an expedition, a lost porter, and a young army deserter.

19:30 Palimpsest of the Africa Museum Matthias de Groof, Mona Mpembele (BE, 2018)

“Palimpsest of the Africa museum” documents the renovation of the Africa museum as an esthetic mourning process, shows the complexity of the alterations and reveals through the eyes of the Belgian African Diapsora what the renovation really puts at stake: the decolonization of the Self.

The screening will be followed by a debate with Matthias De Groof and Mona Mpembele, Jean Bofane (writer), Dr. Bambi Ceuppens (anthropologist, RMCA), moderated by Ayoko Mensah (programmer, Bozar Africa Desk).

DEBATE Children of the Colony – Horta Hall: 10.12.2018

Congo won its independence decades ago, but decolonisation is not yet over yet. On Monday 10 December, deputy chair of the Women’s Council Tracy Bibo-Tansia, opinion former Heleen Debeuckelaere, Professor Idesbald Goddeeris, writer and activist Melat Nigussie and author of Congo: The Epic History of a People, David Van Reybrouck, share their ideas and discuss how they are confronted daily with the legacies of the colonial era. During this lively debate we will be looking for solutions and answers.

Join us in a discussion around the issue of how we should deal with this emotionally charged and difficult chapter of our history.
