Vibrant global sounds from Ghana
BRDCST is AB’s outstanding indoor spring festival spotlighting musical boundlessness. The name is a direct reference to the retro futuristic electronica-pop of the English band Broadcast that released inspiring albums like ‘Haha Sound’ and ‘Noise Made By The People’ over the past decade. Artists who feel strongly about musical innovation form the focal point for BRDCST. Our musical gut feeling will do the rest.
GLITTERBEAT
AB forges a real alliance with one of the most impressive, vibrant global sounds labels of the moment: Glitterbeat. Glitterbeat has impressed us in recent years with exceptionally exciting ‘worldy’ albums by artists like Tamikrest, Bixiga 70, Noura Mint Seymali or Turkey’s Gaye Su Akyol. For the opening night of BRDCST, we present you with two brand new Glitterbeat signings.
King Ayisoba
King Ayisoba is a star in his homeland, Ghana. His kologo – a two-stringed guitar – sounds both melodic and percussive and he influenced the music scene in capital Accra by mixing traditional instrument with beats, bass and hip life (a style that arose in the mid ’90s in Ghana, containing elements of hip-hop as well as dancehall). In The Netherlands, his albums have been released by The Ex frontman Arnold de Boer (on his very own Makkum Records). Then there was also the collector ‘This is Kologo Power!’, which gave an excellent insight into the wealth of kologo players in Ghana.
ZEA (Nl)
ZEA = Arnold de Boer (The Ex) deploying guitar and sampler for an almighty bout of crazily high energy songs – urgent lyrics over guitar, roughshod beats and grimy bass lines. Joyfully obstinate, wonderfully bonkers.
DJ ARNOLD DE BOER (THE EX / MAKKUM RECORDS) (NL)
The Ex frontman Arnold de Boer is not only the founder of his own solo-project, Zea. He also runs his very own label Makkum Records. Aside from his own output, he fully explores the music scene in Ghana (with releases by the likes of King Ayisoba, Prince Buju, …).
