Documentary screening  and talk on Syria and its Christian communities with the creators of the movie

Invited guests:

Szabolcs Sajgó SJ
Jesuit Refugee Service, Hungary

Beatrix Siklósi
channel director, MTVA Hungary

Discussion moderated by György Hölvényi, Member of the European Parliament

In summer 2014, the terror group so-called Islamic State (ISIS) occupied vast territories of Northern Iraq, historically populated largely by Christians. During one single day, one hundred thousand inhabitants were forced to leave from the city of Mosul (in the Bible: Nineveh) and the surrounding settlements. Later on, ISIS continued its expansion to enormous territories of Syria, too.

György Hölvényi MEP has considered as a matter of conscience and humanitarian duty to drive the attention of Europe and the European Parliament to the dramatic extent of the persecution of Christians in the Middle East. With the support of Hungary and the EPP Group, he carried out several visits to the region, at three occasions with Franciscan priest Fr Csaba Böjte ofm and Jesuit father Szabocs Sajgó sj, accompanied by the crew of Hungarian state TV channel MTVA. As a result, the documentary series, “Theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven,” were filmed, edited by director Beatrix Siklósi and camera crew Géza Marossy. At the screening in Brussels, the documentary film on Syria will be introduced.

The documentary movie testifies the reality by the dramatic visual illustration and testimonies of local public and religious leaders in fellowship with the people in need. It transmits the message: Europe must manifest an active solidarity in order to save ancient Christian communities and other vulnerable groups.

The film screening will be in Hungarian with English subtitles, the talk will be held in Hungarian with English translation.
