In 2016, Agnès Varda did us the honor to present the exhibition PATATES & COMPAGNIE at the Museum of Ixelles. Many of you had the chance to meet her on this occasion, and to immerse yourself in her creative, off-beat and poetic universe.
This Tuesday, September 17, a special tribute will be paid to the filmmaker, visual artist and photographer born in Ixelles. In view of his special affection for Ixelles and Belgium, the Mayors and Aldermen of Ixelles, Flagey, and Cinematek wished to pay him a tribute multiform that will take place on Tuesday, September 17 from 16:30.
A tribute plaque will be affixed to the birthplace of Agnès Varda. Ernotte-Boondael,vegetable gardens and Flagey’s studio 5 will be named after this legendary icon.
This tribute will take place in the presence of his daughter Rosalie Varda. The tribute day will be closed by a reception followed by the screening of the film Les Plages d’Agnès in Flagey.
The artist Agnès Varda died on March 29, 2019 in Paris. Photographer and renowned filmmaker since the 1950s, crowned with awards and prizes among the most prestigious for her cinematic, dense and inventive work, Agnès Varda then continued on her way in the field of visual arts by becoming a “young visual artist”. With a freshness, a candor, unparalleled humor and delicacy, Agnès Varda has reinvented, throughout her life, a universe creative, offbeat and poetic. Agnès Varda is also one of the female representatives of the new wave, whose work is impregnated.
What is less well known is that Agnès Varda was born in Ixelles and grew up at 38 Avenue de la Couronne until the age of 12. These years of childhood are foundational, decisive, and have left an important mark in the imagination of the artist.

Speeches of aldermen of green spaces and communal properties Audrey Lhoest and Anais Camus. A glass of friendship with neighborhood associations, water gardeners and residents.

6:45 pm: Cocktail dinner (reserved for guests and the press)
7:45 pm: Inauguration of “Studio 5 – Agnès Varda” – the new sign will be unveiled
