We know Ernest Claes (1885-1968) as a storyteller par excellence. He is the author of well-known folk books such as the immensely popular De witte, which was twice adapted into a film. His stories tend to involve themes of youth, war, and events in his native Zichem. In addition to being a successful author, Claes was a soldier, political militant, Catholic, journalist, and diarist. In short, he was a highly complex man who was heavily influenced by two world wars and repression of various forms throughout the course of his life, but who eventually found his way – and his voice – in what were arguably the most turbulent years of the 20th century.
Warre Borgmans (born 1956) is a master storyteller and one of Flanders’ most beloved actors. The general public knows him from both television and film, in particular his roles in Kulderzipken, Stille waters and Windkracht 10. He was one of the founders of Het Gezelschap van de Witte Kraai and De Tijd theatre companies, for whom he performed numerous times. He received the Louis D’Or for his leading role in Rijkemanshuis, directed by Ivo van Hove. The whole of Flanders, young and old, knows his fantastic narrative voice, which often features in the award-winning audio series Heerlijk Hoorspelen.
