The port of Antwerp has anchored its largest container ship this month.

MSC Leni, is a container ship which has a capacity of 23,756 standard containers. Even though Antwerp was not initially on the route of the container, due to navigation services, the container ship had to make a stop.

According to the officials, this is the largest container ship to have been anchored at the port of Antwerp. MSC Leni arrived at the port on Sunday evening.

The port’s previous record was anchoring MSC Isabella, a container ship with a hundred less containers than Leni. MSC Isabella stacks no fewer than 24 rows of containers on its deck. The ship can transport 23,656 containers.

They offer a lunch menu in the afternoons and guests can enjoy a comprehensive menu in a delightful setting for dinner. Octave also serves delectable desserts throughout the day, prepared in their own Bean to Bar studio.

The Story behind Octave

Octaaf Callebaut was born in a family of beer brewers. However, he didn’t really know what to do with his life. Brewing beer just wasn’t his thing. In the end, his father entrusted him with the eighth production line of the family company, adding: “Just figure out for yourself what you want to do with it.” In the back of the factory, Octaaf silently started to experiment with cocoa beans, sugar and milk.

In 1911, the smell of Octaaf’s first chocolate creations started to overtake the beer scent that used to dominate in the family company. Driven by curiosity, the factory’s workers come to have a look. “What’s that syrupy substance?”, one of them asks. He’s the first one to taste the chocolate straight from the pot. Other colleagues follow his example, and they are all enchanted by the velvety, sweet taste. News of the birth of the delicious chocolate spread fast.

Encouraged by his wife Juliette, Octaaf goes looking for new tastes, techniques and products. The flavours he creates keep on enchanting everyone. The eighth line becomes world famous and turns into the global chocolate empire it is today. Today, the brewery is no more, but Wieze now has the biggest chocolate factory in the world.

As Octaaf was a Belgian taste pioneer, taste is exactly what restaurant Octave is all about.

2018 looks set to be a record year for the Port of Antwerp for the sixth time in a row, with growth in all types of cargo and a recent wave of investments. This confirms the port’s attraction and further establishes its position as a world-class player that is also home to the largest integrated chemical cluster in Europe. Crucially it also assures the continuity of the port’s role as the main engine of the Belgian economy. In 2019 the Port Authority will keep to the same course, further building a sustainable future for the port. In pursuit of this goal it is concentrating heavily on structural solutions to challenges such as mobility, the energy transition, digitisation and innovation.

Unparalleled growth in all segments

With expected growth of 5.1% compared with 2017, the earlier forecasts of a 6th successive record year have been confirmed. The expected total freight volume in 2018 comes to 235 million tonnes, a new record, with unparalleled growth in all types of cargo. The large expansion in container freight continues, reaching 130 million tonnes (up 5.8%) or 11 million TEU (up 5.5%). Liquid and solid bulk for their part are up by respectively 4.5% (to 76.5 million tonnes) and 5% (to 12.8 million tonnes), while break bulk has experienced growth of 1.8% (to 15.6 million tonnes).

Wave of investment confirms attraction of chemical cluster

In 2018 leading international players in the chemical industry including among others Borealis, INEOS, Nippon, Sea-Mol and Oiltanking/AGT brought a huge wave of investment to the port, amounting to more than 2 billion euros. Their choice of Antwerp further confirms the port’s attractiveness for chemical companies, as the largest integrated chemical cluster in Europe. Indeed it makes Antwerp even more attractive for them.

Port Authority CEO Jacques Vandermeiren declared: « With these excellent growth figures and the recent surge of investment, in 2018 the port has once more confirmed its role as the main engine of the Belgian economy. Now we will continue on the same course as before, towards a sustainable port of the future. But to keep growing in a sustainable way, we together with the whole port community must strain every effort to meet the challenges facing us today. The port of the future must have enough capacity and be accessible, sustainable, smart and secure to remain attractive for investors. »

Need for additional container capacity

While the new record year and the investment surge together confirm the vitality of the port, they also confirm earlier forecasts that the maximum container capacity will very soon be reached so that additional container handling capacity is urgently needed.

Port Authority CEO Jacques Vandermeiren outlined the situation: “We are already far beyond the optimum capacity limits in the terminals below the locks, with serious consequences for efficiency. We therefore continue to insist that additional container capacity below the locks is urgently needed. The Port of Antwerp is doing very well, which is good news for the economy. But it is also very important to keep up this impetus and to build the necessary capacity as soon as possible. The most recent draft version of the Preference Decree for creation of additional container capacity represents the last straight towards a breakthrough in this complex project. We are therefore very pleased with the efforts by the Flemish administration, and are glad to work constructively on further development of Alternative 9 which is now being considered. This alternative now has to be further tweaked in nautical and operational terms in order to make it sufficiently feasible and attractive for the economic operators while limiting the environmental impact to the absolute minimum. »

35 million euros for transition projects

The transition to a circular low-carbon economy is another main objective of the Antwerp Port Authority. Over the next three years the Port Authority will therefore invest no less than 35 million euros in innovative sustainability projects. One good example of this is the declared ambition of making onshore power supplies available for seagoing ships at berth in the Deurganck dock in the near future, which will lower NO2 (nitrogen oxide) emissions by 36%. In addition we seek to promote alternative sustainable fuels such as LNG and hydrogen. This year the CMB shipping company won the Sustainability Award with the « Hydroville, » the first hydrogen-powered passenger ferry. Given the very promising sustainability potential of hydrogen we are currently studying the feasibility of setting up a hydrogen fuel station in the port. Earlier this month a hydroturbine was installed in the Kallo lock to generate electricity from water power. The aim is to use this advanced technology to make all sea locks in the port energy-neutral in the longer term.

A smart, innovative and secure port thanks to digital transformation

The port of the future will also be a smart port, with the emphasis on innovation and digitisation. The Port Authority has therefore assumed a pioneering role in digital transformation, aimed at becoming an open and innovative hub for the introduction of new technologies. The ambition is to install a digital nervous system covering the entire port with among other things smart cameras, sensors and drones to give full monitoring, which in turn will make it possible to respond directly to events in the port. In addition, data is being made transparent and available to all players in the supply chain thanks to NxtPort, the data platform for the port that was set up nearly two years ago.

In the words of Jacques Vandermeiren: « With the growing importance of data and the gains in efficiency that we seek to derive from it, in future the Port Authority will build further on the foundations that it has already laid with NxtPort. The increased participation in NxtPort by the Port Authority underlines this confidence. We strongly believe that digitisation will smooth the way for smart, efficient and lower-cost logistics, and that it will also play an increasingly important role in terms of mobility and monitoring emissions. »

Yes, Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald are set to embark on a trip down memory lane in what promises to be the most magical production yet.The frozen extravaganza will head to Belgium early in the New Year, bringing with it all of the best loved characters from Disney’s most popular films.

Mickey Mouse, Elsa from Frozen, Finding Nemo’s Dory and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story will all be getting their skates on in 2019. Here is everything you need to know about The Wonderful World of Disney on Ice. The show contains segments of many classic Disney movies and the spectacular stage design and mesmerising ice-skating will bring to life over a dozen films including Frozen, The Lion King, Finding Dory, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast.

Disney On Ice comes to Brussels and Antwerp in February with an all new production under the title « Dream Big. » Audiences will set sail with the wayfinder Moana as she makes her European debut. The show, produced by Feld Entertainment, assembles a collection of inspiring stories connected by a cast of characters. Alongside Moana and demigod Maui are eight Disney tales, including Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Tangled.

There will also be a special celebration of 90 years of a Walt Disney ‘True Original,’ Mickey Mouse. In this brand-new ice skating spectacular you travel to the kingdom of Arendelle with Anna, Elsa and Olaf in a dramatic retelling of the sisterly love that saved a kingdom. Executive vice president and producer Nicole Feld said that « Disney On Ice presents Dream Big » was created with the intention to « inspire everyone to explore their world by highlighting the defining moments of relatable characters who became their own heroes.

« Having both a daughter and son at home, I knew it was important to present a variety of Disney stories as well as show the connection between these stories and illustrate how a journey can unfold in many ways. » Feld Entertainment regional vice president Steven Armstrong says, « Our greatest wish for our guests is that they will be inspired by these tales of bravery and see that anything is possible if you follow your dreams.

« Many of the stories we’re presenting – like Cinderella and The Little Mermaid – have been around for generations and stand the test of time. Others, like Moana and Frozen, inspire a new generation of young girls through self-reliance and a belief in themselves. » The show captures all the magic and adventure of Disney’s immortal tales through cutting edge figure-skating, eye catching costumes and stunning set designs. Through innovative lighting and thrilling special effects, audiences are transported to a world of imagination, where heroes of every kind seek to fulfil their dreams.

Mythical animals, symbolism and legends. Yes, Christmas has it all but there’s something else happening over the festive period that encompasses all of these as well. It’s called « China Light Zoo », the 2018 edition of what is now a highly popular annual event held in the grounds of Antwerp zoo each winter.

For those unfamiliar with the event, this is a particularly impressive display of light sculptures which give you the chance to also learn a bit about ancient China. This year’s display tells the story of Princess Lotus and her beloved. Impressive Chinese luminous objects tell of their mythical love affair.

All of this is beautifully complemented by dreamy traditional music and magical Chinese dances. The event started in 2014 but this year it takes place at a special time in the history of Antwerp Zoo – its 175th anniversary. The display of Chinese lanterns is a centuries-old tradition and for this special anniversary edition the zoo looked East for inspiration.

Teams in China and Antwerp came up with a great story which really immerses visitors in Oriental culture and architecture and the world of lotus, dragons and buddhas.

Chinese – and local – craftsmen have spent weeks diligently welding the different parts of the compositions together and putting them in the right place. The handmade metal structures have been turned into shining 3-dimensional images. Some of the figures and objects were assembled in Antwerp itself while others were made by a near 100-strong team of artists in China and then transported to Antwerp by ship. The light artists come from Zigong in the province of Sichuan, a city world famous for its light festival.

At China Light ZOO you walk past a 4 metre-high Buddha while the theme of « love and war » is reflected in the warriors of the terracotta army. Not to be outdone, a 15-metre whale is one of the showpieces of this new edition. You can also send greetings to the world on a wish tree.

Visitors will ogle at a 30-metre palace, 50-metre phoenix and a 60-metre-long dragon boat scene. The number of objects has quadrupled compared to the first edition.

The statistics are highly impressive: the display features 71 compositions; 2,700 luminous objects (in 2014, they had only 631); 4,500 hours of know-how; 60 tons of steel (15 tons in 2014); 30,000 small lights; 36 containers (9 in 2014); 130 artists collaborators; 32 artists (compared to 23 in 2014) and 25,000 meters of satin.

It’s great for a visit at any time of the day but is particularly popular and magical in evening when the grounds of the gardens are lit and, at fixed times, accompanied by two dances of traditional dancing. You and friends can gather round braziers and warm up with mulled wine, hot chocolate, Chinese tea or beer. It is also a nice way to gear up for Chinese New Year in February.

A zoo spokesman said, « We are closing the year of our 175th anniversary with great fanfare. This festival of Chinese lights will amaze, not only with bright works of art but also with some imposing unique characters. The zoo was inspired by what is done in China and adapted this. »

The spectacle runs until 13 January 2019 (with the exception of 24 and 31 December). You can start a visit between 6pm and 8pm during one of three time slots (from 6-7.30pm; 7-8.30pm or 8-9.30pm).

The time slot determines when you start your visit before the show closes at 9.30pm.

Antwerp zoo is easy to access as is located next to the city’s Central Station with excellent rail links to Brussels. For those travelling by car there are car parks within walking distance of the zoo (visitors get a special China Light discount at some of them).

Prices vary from €10 to €17 and a zoo/Planckendael subscription entitles you to a discount.

The spectacle was, when it was launched four years ago, a first in Belgium and this brand new concept and story have been specially written for 2018 – one reason why China Light ZOO promises to be more sparkling than ever.

It’s described as a « fairy tale-like light show that immerses the zoo and winter in Antwerp in a magical atmosphere. »

So, what better excuse to make a beeline to Belgium’s brilliant 2nd city for a real treat this festive season?

Rubens inspires” kicks off on June 1st. Four major exhibitions are also set to open on this date. So dive into the festive opening weekend, like a Baroque bon vivant. Immerse yourself in the world of the Baroque, with a whirl of parties, performances, concerts and exhibitions.

1. Michaelina, Baroque’s leading lady

The “Michaelina” exhibition showcases the exceptional talent of an artist who rose to fame at a time when women artists were very rare. We know very little about her life (1604-1689) but the art she created is simply phenomenal. She excelled because of her talent, her guts and her versatility.

The MAS welcomes Baroque’s Leading Lady from 1 June.

2. Experience traps

A forest that smells like an energy drink. A gigantic bouncy castle and special open-air performances. That is what you get if you ask contemporary artists to work with the ideas behind the Baroque landscape. Experience Traps is an exhibition that will confuse, trick and surprise you.

From 1 June at the Middelheim Museum.

3. Sanguine

Sanguine | Bloedrood is one of the biggest exhibitions during the cultural city-wide festival “Antwerp Baroque 2018”. With this exhibition in the M HKA, the curator Luc Tuymans hopes to create a dialogue between the old Baroque masters and contemporary artists. He has chosen to contrast masterpieces by Caravaggio, van Dyck and Rubens with classic works by contemporary artists such as Edward Kienholz and Michaël Borremans.

From 1 June at M HKA.

4. Rubens’ return

There can be no doubts about the fact that Peter Paul Rubens was Antwerp’s greatest Baroque painter. He was already famous during his lifetime. Rubens was a brilliant artist, who managed a large workshop, designed his own home and who travelled around Europe as a diplomat. The collection of the Rubens House will be enriched with a number of art historical masterpieces.

Definitely a good opportunity to (re-)discover the Rubens House.

5. Nude by Paul Kooiker

Paul Kooiker’s work is about looking, about voyeurism and distance. About the world that creeps into a photographer’s studio and how the photographer steps out into the world, with an open mind and gaze, in response to this. The exhibition Untitled (Nude) is an alternative retrospective of Kooiker’s work, raising questions about his position as a photographer, the spectator and his own gaze.

From 29 June at FOMU

6. Jan Fabre

Jan Fabre has created three new altarpieces for the AMUZ early music centre, in the former Church of St. Augustine. He has followed the same brief that Rubens, Jordaens and van Dyck received in 1628 for his commission. The works of these artists are now part of the collection of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. Fabre’s work will fill the empty walls again.

From 3 July at AMUZ

7. Baroque Murals

4 artists, 4 styles, 4 Baroque motifs, 4 murals. The graffiti artist Yvon Tordoir and his fellow artists, Astro from Paris, Smug from Glasgow and El Mac from Los Angeles, will be giving four Antwerp walls a modern yet Baroque make-over.

The works are on display from early June onwards in Antwerp’s city centre.

A driving school made by women, for women, might be set up over the coming months in Belgium.

As a woman, would you feel more comfortable taught driving by another woman? Although that question may not seem so obvious to men, Samira Masrour designed such a driving school.

It was initially started some years ago in the Netherlands under the name « As-Salamoe àlaykoem« , and offered lessons where only women instructors would teach.

Marour’s aims are to build another business in Antwerp (Merksem) after she has received dozens of phone calls to ask for this type of school in Belgium.

Such a success might seem surprising, but Masrour pointed out a few simple reasons. “The women often feel uncomfortable when they are driving next to a man”, she told Het Laatste Nieuws.

Woman Driving school in Antwerp

According to her, men are more brutal while driving, and the women who were taught by women are better drivers than those who learnt with men.

Setting up this type of driving school in Belgium, however, could be considered sensitive as many people could find it discriminatory or religiously-based. That’s what Ben Weyts, the Flemish minister for mobility, stated when asked to comment on the potential initiative. “This is ridiculous”, he said. “I suspect it relies on certain beliefs that aim to separate men and women”, he added. Mr Weyts also aims to bar Masrous from starting her initiative in Flanders.

Masrous denied such accusations. « There is absolutely no way it relies either on culture or religion, » she said. The issue would rather be about ways of teaching and she is keen to welcome all the women who are up to learn how to drive. She also explained that her initiative would meet market demand. “We have nothing against the men. They will always be welcomed, to ask information on behalf of an aunt, a sister or a friend.” Masrour concluded.

But for now, future drivers in Belgium should watch out for a potential all woman driving school in Belgium.
