The Smurfs turned 60 this week

On October 23, 1958 the blue Smurfs appeared for the first time in the Journal de Spirou.

This year, as the Smurfs celebrated their 60th anniversary, Véronique Culliford, the daughter of the creator Peyo Culliford, was present at the Smurf Experience at the Brussels Expo. The Smurf Experience was a symbolic event which gathered 300 children from all over Belgium.

The Smurfs constitute of a family inheritance which started in Belgium, said Ms. Culliford. She further adds that « the trans-generational characters helped convey positive values and messages ». Their first appearance dates back in 1958 with the « The Smurfs Six Flute ». After Peyo passed away in 1992, his son Thierry Culiford continued the work. So far, the Smurfs have managed to sell more than 50 million albums of their 35 adventures in approximately 70 countries.

The Smurf Experience has attracted 120,000 visitors since it opened in June. You should plan to check it out before its closing on January 27 at Palais 2 of the Brussels Expo at Heysel. Afterwards, the expo will begin a 5-year international tour.

New fresco of the Smurfs in front of Central Station

After Ducobu, the Smurfs have a new fresco in front of Central Station.

The passage of the Putterie, located just in front of the Brussels-Central station, proved to be the ideal ceiling to welcome the little blue heroes of Peyo. This new fresco has 206m2, 60 liters of paint was used, including 10 liters of blue paint for the Smurfs. The blue comic book heroes can thus celebrate their 60th birthday with a place in the comic book route of the City.

2018 is the year The Smurfs celebrate their 60th birthday, and they’re building their village at Brussels Expo from June 9 for the festivities. Welcome to The Smurf Experience.

The Smurf Experience offers an unprecedented chance to plunge into the magical world of these little blue elves. An exploration with spectacular special effects and displays for a unique experience to share with the family.

Due to its large height, once you enter the village, you will truly be smurified, experiencing everything as the little blue people do. But it won’t be an entirely peaceful endeavour, because the village is threatened by the abominable Gargamel! Get ready to help Papa Smurf and go on an adventure to thwart the wizard’s evil plans!

You’ll also get to experience a journey full of amazing discoveries and special effects: Holograms, Virtual Reality, Kinect, Video Mapping and much more will plunge you into an immersive adventure.

Since 2016, they have been the United Nations Ambassadors for the « Small Smurfs, Big Goals » campaign presenting the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2030. Tolerance, solidarity, friendship and protecting the environment have always been the values embodied by the Smurfs. All these core values will be a theme expressed throughout edutainment on the journey through the Smurf Experience.
