100 companies are responsible for 71% of global greenhouse gas emissions since 1988: A crowd denounces in the streets of Brussels

On Saturday 24th of November, the day after Black Friday, about twenty members of the association Friends of the Earth have sung in the streets and subway trains in Brussels to denounce over consumption. The action was part of the #StopClimateCriminals call for action, prior to COP24.

They call to protect the planet and prosecute environmental criminals.

“Black Friday is associated with over-consumption, which inevitably has an impact on the environment and the climate,” said Clémentine Squevin, host of Friends of the Earth. “We also want to target the industries that have the biggest impact on the environment. We want to get consumers to think about what they really need, which is called voluntary simplicity.”

Participants recalled that 100 companies have been responsible for 71% of global greenhouse gas emissions since 1988, according to a report released by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). They also noted that the textile industry is one of the world’s most economically impactful economic activities, according to a Carbon Trust study in 2011. As part of the #StopClimateCriminals call for action Activists also decorated the windows of the ING bank with messages against environmental criminals, near the Throne station.
