Belgium is well represented on the prestigious Forbes « 30 under 30 » list

Every year, the American business magazine, Forbes, lists the thirty most promising Europeans aged under thirty. Once again, our small country is well represented this year. Indeed, Director Lukas Dhont has been crowned in the ‘Entertainment’ category, whilst scientists Hannelore Bové (Hasselt University (UHasselt)) and Angelique Van Ombergen (University of Antwerp (UAntwerp)) have received awards in the ‘Science & Healthcare’ category.

This year, Lukas Dhont was much admired for this debut film Girl. He duly won dozens of film prizes and was even nominated for a Golden Globe. Forbes spotted his talent as well. Dhont received a place in the ‘Entertainment’ category, where the young director joins, among others, British actors Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Tom Holland (Spiderman) and British singer George Ezra.

Two Flemish people were included in the ‘Science and Healthcare’ category. Last year, UHasselt researcher Hannelore Bové already reached the final of ’Science Talent 2018’, a contest run by the magazine New Scientist. Her research, in which she successfully detected soot particles in human samples such as blood or urine, clearly also made an impression on Forbes.

Joining Bové on the list is neuroscientist Angelique Van Ombergen (UAntwerp). During her doctoral and post-doctoral research, Angelique investigated how an astronaut’s brain adapts to space travel and how people could therefore live on other planets. Since January 2019, she has been working as Science Coordinator Human Research at the European Space Agency.
