What to do this Sunday? A Dynamic Tour Proposal
A Sunday spent in bed relaxing and catching up on TV-series is a Sunday well spent. Nonetheless, in these last weeks Brussels gave us amazing sunny and warm days and it would be a pity not seizing the opportunity! Wandering around the city aimlessly is nice and calming, but you may end up taking the same streets and visiting the same places. For this, we thought about suggesting you a possible tour you may take this Sunday, with the family or by yourself, to reconnect with the city and enjoy its surprises!
The tour starts in Place du Jeu de Balle, in the unique area of Les Marolles. Every Sunday a flea market is set in the square, filling the space with music, people chatting and, most importantly, with vintage objects. The atmosphere is relaxed and familiar, people walk around the stands, checking second hand clothes, wooden ducks (surprisingly, there are many every Sunday…), books, piece of art and exotic souvenirs. Some stands also present old cameras, photos and postcards, transporting the visitor to a nostalgic, sepia-colored version of Brussels. The flea market may take you 20 minutes as well as an hour, depending how deeply you merge in its secrets. After that you may need to reinvigorate yourself with some tasty, tasty food.
At a five minutes’ walk from the market there is the famous Glass Elevator, which can take you up -for free- till Palais de Justice and show you a very picturesque image of the city from above.
After the quick sightseen -or even before, if you’re very hungry!- close to the elevator’s base there is La Mer du Nord. The fish-bar offers a wide choice of dishes based on fresh fish, from soups to oysters, on a nice patio.
After enjoying lunch, we’d recommend taking Rue Haute, checking the very furnished second hand shops around you, to then move towards the Musical Instruments Museum, in Mont des Arts.
Skip the line, forget the ticket for the exhibition and aim only to the last floor: a wonderful terrace is waiting for you! Sip a glass of your favorite drink in the shade, while admiring once again the beauty of Brussels from above. If the sky is clear enough you can easily spot the Atomium too!
From Mont des Arts go down, through the park: reach Grand Place, admire its beautiful gothic façades, and walk towards Sainte Catherine.
The area, especially with the warm season, is sunny, with a nice square in front of the cathedral. Children can play around and the adults can enjoy the many bars around, such as Bar des Amis, a relaxed and retro-like bar. If booze is not your thing, you can opt for a nice walk around the canal or a visit to Tulitu bookstore (open the 1st and the 2nd Sunday of the month from 12h to 18h). You can also try to spot la Tour Noire, a medieval tower of the 13th century, part of the original first city walls.
