Sometimes, we are tempted to forget how priviledged we are here in Brussels: no civil war like in so many other parts of the world. Kashmir is one of those places: a disputed territory in the Himalayas and one of the most beautiful parts of the world. It is divided between India (43%), Pakistan (37%) and China (20%). Because of its history and its geographical location, it is one of the world’s most militarized zone. In the last century, it has seen three major wars between India and Pakistan. In the Indian-administered part, clashes are quite frequent: arrests, human right violations, disappearances … Since 1989 more than 60,000 citizen have been killed.

As there are no foreign media correspondents based in the region, news are reaching us only via the web. Rarely, we have the possibility to be confronted with a first-hand testimony of someone from the region. At the end of this week, three experts from the region will be in Brussels to testify: the human rights lawyer Barrister Majid Tramboo and the human rights activists Shamim Shawl and Prof Nazir Shawl.

Among others, they will speak about a new weapon, which has just appeared in the Indian-administered part: Pellet Guns. Their bullets, often fired at the heads of civilians, disfigure the face and destroy eyes.

In case you are interested to receive news from this nearly forgotten deadly conflict in Kashmir, you are invited to participate: Friday, 27 April, at 18.30 to the Press Club Brussels Europe (Rue Froissart 95).
