The last male northern white rhinoceros, named Sudan, died a year ago in Kenya. In the years before his death he was anything but alone. Day and night he was attended by armed rangers and lovingly fed and stroked by his permanent carers. From all around the world journalists and tourists came to catch a glimpse of him. And scientists intend to keep his species alive, with sperm to be stored in liquid nitrogen in Europe for at least 3000 years. What is so attractive about the threat to his species’ extinction? And what does that tell us about our own species?
