Organised jointly by the Flanders Festival Brussels and the Flemish cultural radio station, Klara, the KlaraFestival offers a variety of classical music events – from gala evenings to lunchtime concerts – at a various city venues over a fortnight. The line-up includes opera and celebrated international orchestras, as well as premieres and innovative multidisciplinary productions.
When people travel, for whatever reason, their music travels with them. Music is often the most vivid memory of their native land and offers solid footing. When composers migrate, they also use their music to enter into a dialogue with a new audience. Inter- and transcultural processes and exchanges come into existence, inspiration and creativity result. Consequently, there’s not a place in the world with one-dimensional, ‘pure’ music or culture. It is precisely the dynamics of this interaction that bring to life cultures, and music is its beating heart. Klarafestival 2017 focuses on the role of location and relocation in the life and work of composers, hoping to contribute in this way to changing the perception around migration. On the programme are works by the greatest composers who have poured their experiences of and emotions about their musical roots and identity, their banishment and their homesickness into their at once most poignant and most beautiful music.
