For this new edition of WINTER TIME, in collaboration with Cinema Aventure, BOZAR, Atelier 210, Zawya and Cimatheque, CINEMA GALERIES offers a focus on Cairo and Egyptian cinema.
It is an opportunity to immerse oneself in a cinema that has been constantly traversed by the events that have marked the history of his country and reflected the most intimate transformations. In the Last Days of the City, at the opening of the festival, is only an example of films able to tell how much the political sphere acts as much on the everyday life of the inhabitants of Cairo as on the art of filming …
Cairo (Arabic: لقاهرة, or Miṣr, used to indicate both Egypt, its capital and the Egyptian language) is the largest city in the Middle East. In this megalopolis, turbulent mosques, mausoleums, Sufi convents, floating houses, hammams and churches coexist with an urban center in Haussman style.
Since Abdel Fattah al-Sissi came to power in 2013, in the traditional circuit the directors have to obtain, on presentation of the script, a license to shoot issued by the union of the cinema as well as an authorization to film in public places by the Ministry of the Interior.
Censorship remains present, especially against topics related to sexuality or religion. Even if filmmakers who shoot without licenses risk criminal sanctions, they also continue to make films to express their vision of Egyptian society.
New poetic forms also continue to appear in young directors like Mohamed Hammad (Withered Green) and Mohamed Siam (Amal and Whose country?). Places like Cimatheque and Zawya, partners in the programming of this new edition, are intended to give visibility to contemporary creation in Egypt and the Arab world, as well as to Egyptian and foreign films produced outside traditional channels.
