Video: Undercover Police arrests three suspects at gun point near Schuman

A police operation resulting in the arrest of three suspects took place on Tuesday August 13th at 15:05 at Avenue Cortenbergh 50, about 50 meters away from Schumann Roundabout, and 300 meters away from a EU Commission building.

Three male-suspects held at a gun point by several police officers were instructed to step out of their car and to lie down on the ground, before they were arrested and driven off in undercover police cars.

The first suspect’s identity is heard to be confirmed on the scene by an officer while walking towards his arrest, while another one of the suspects was blindfolded.

The car of the arrested men -a Mercedes- was driven away by a member of the undercover police.

The operation was around 6 minutes in length without any casualties. The eye-witnesses confirmed the police officers’ professional way in completing the operation.

Extraordinary EU Heads of State meeting on Sunday 25th: here are the security and traffic measures

On Sunday 25 November 2018, an extraordinary meeting of EU Heads of State and Government will be held in Brussels in the European Council buildings on Rue de la Loi. The security forces will install a security perimeter in the neighborhood. Only authorized persons can enter it.

Security perimeter limits

A security perimeter will be put in place on November 25, 2018 . The Schuman district will be closed to traffic:

Schuman roundabout
rue Froissart, between rue Belliard and the Schuman roundabout
rue de la Loi between the Schuman roundabout and the Residence Palace
Just Lipse Street

Important notes:

Deliveries will not be possible
Garbage bags, bicycles and terraces can not be put on sidewalks in the security perimeter

Who can access the security perimeter?

With a vehicle:

official delegations accredited by the Council and / or the police
emergency and police services
residents duly accredited by the police (access only via Avenue d’Auderghem )

Walking:

residents registered in the area with their identity card
Employees and tradesmen carrying their identity card and a pass (application to be submitted via the employer)
any person with a pass and his identity card

Where to get a « pass » or a certificate?

Applications must be submitted via the form available on the site

The city of Brussels commemorates the Treaty of Rome

The city of Brussels has commemorated the Treaty of Rome by placing 5 explanatory plaques in different places and buildings which are connected to two treaties.

On March 25th, 1957, Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands signed in Rome two treaties: the first one created the European Economic Community (EEC); and the second one created the European Atomic Energy Community (EAEC).

This initiative comes only a year after the two Treaties of Rome celebrated their 60^th anniversary and the establishment of the EEC and EAEC.

Considering that the treaties had been negotiated in Brussels, the City Councilor of Urban Planning and Heritage noted the importance of installing the plaques.

The Councilor of Public Affairs perceives the initiative as an encouragement for people in Brussels to highlight the founding treaties that allowed the development of collaborations between European countries, as well as an encouragement to rediscover the cosmopolitan Schuman area.

European summit in Brussels on 23 February 2018

On Friday 23 February 2018, a European Summit of the Heads of state and Government of the European Union will be held in Brussels in the buildings of the Council of the European Union, at the Rue de la Loi. A safety zone will be set up. Only authorized persons can enter this zone on foot.

Limits of the safety zone?

The safety zone will be closed on 23 February 2018:

Traffic circle Schuman
Rue Froissart, between the Rue Juste Lipse and the Traffic circle Schuman
Rue de la Loi, between the Traffic circle Schuman and ‘Residence Palace’
Rue Juste Lipse
Boulevard Charlemagne, between the Rue Stévin and the Rue de la Loi

Attention: only vehicles authorized by the services of the Council of the European Union and the police will have access. Deliveries will not be possible.

Who can enter the safety zone?

Following people can enter the safety zone on foot, on the footpaths at the side of the buildings, not at the side of the Justus Lipsius building:

the local residents with their ID card
the employees and the shopkeepers with a police certificate delivered by the employer
every person with a pass

Where to obtain a ‘pass’ or certificate?

The demands can be downloaded at www.polbru.be/eurotop and must be sent electronically to the police station of the 5th division of the Police of Brussels Capital Ixelles, Boulevard Clovis 10 – 1000 Brussels – 02 279 85 35 or 02 279 85 36. The passes will be available there from 12 February 2018 (possibly after the necessary checks).

New Schuman: from a roundabout to a urban agora

Last Thursday, Pascal Smet, Brussels Minister for Mobility and Public Works released pictures of the future Schuman square.

Infrastructure works have a long history in Belgium. Following the epical renovation of Schuman metro station, the Brussels authorities decided to work on a new roundabout for Schuman in order to make it more friendly, attractive and inclusive. Schuman is indeed not very welcoming for both pedestrians and cyclists.

In a press release released last Thursday, Pascal Smet stated that “Schuman square is an example of what Brussels no longer needs to be. This square will be returned to the Brusselians and Europeans. It will become tomorrow a urban agora – a meeting place in a peaceful area”.

A pedestrian area will be set up from Cinquantenaire to rue de la Loi. The public authorities also want to make Rue de la Loi pedestrian from Cinquantenaire to Schuman, although cars would still be allowed to be drive from Cortenbergh to the roundabout.

A call for proposals was launched in 2015 and two architecture firms, COBE (from Denmark) and BRUT (from Belgium) have been selected to design the future square.

Additional reports will be drafted over the upcoming months and a permit application should be submitted by the end of 2018.

Brussels-Capital Region estimated that this project would cost about 7.78 million Euros (excluding VAT). The region will only fund the impact assessments and the management of the project.

The first works should be conducted in the first semester 2019. How much time will it take?
