There is a lot to consider when planning your perfect city getaway: the accommodation, sightseeing, travel and more.

But what remains vital to the smooth-running of a holiday, which many of us seem to overlook, is the airport transfer. Travelling to your hotel in an unknown city can be daunting, not to mention expensive.

To clear the air of uncertainty, airport transfers company Taxi2Airport has investigated the most travel friendly cities in Europe.

Analysing data provided by Taxi-Calculator.com, the average price to travel from the city centre to the main airport (or vice versa) for 14 European capital cities has been calculated, taking into consideration price per mile, base fares, and distance*.

Which cities are the cheapest?

For the cheapest airport transfer, results show that Lisbon is the place to be – for a 5.4km journey from the city’s airport to centre will cost travellers a mere €5.79.

In second place is Ankara – Turkey’s capital will set you back only €13.64 for a 26.5km journey.

Meanwhile, the remaining top countries for cheap travel are as follows:

Madrid (€18.56), Berlin (€20.10), Prague (€21.31), Vienna (€23.75) and Athens (€26.45).

Which cities are the most expensive?

Taxi2Airport can reveal that, at a whopping €52.07 (20.8km journey), Amsterdam tops the table as the most expensive capital city to reach, from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

The next most expensive city is, less surprisingly, London at €50.60 for 25.6km – dropping you off at London Heathrow.

In third place is Stockholm. The city’s low fares of €1.13 (and €4.22 base fee) are unfortunately cancelled out by the distance required to reach its airport, Stockholm Arlanda Airport (40.3km) – as such, the overall total becomes €49.76.

Finally, the remaining expensive cities are: Bern (€43.84), Paris (€42.73), Rome (€36) and Brussels (€26.88).

STIB has issued a statement denying that it ever promoted Uber, after taxi drivers accused the Brussels transport operator of championing the ride-sharing company.

On Thursday morning at 6 a.m., around 40 taxi drivers demonstrated in front of STIB’s depot in Haren to denounce STIB’s perceived promotion of Uber during the presentation of its 2018 annual report. The Brussels-Capital police have also issued a statement claiming that the demonstration ended at around 8.15 a.m., with no further incidents to report.

“STIB never promoted anyone. The relevant slide [shown during the presentation] simply shows all possible modes of transport available in Brussels, without commenting on the nature of their services or their legitimacy,” STIB said on social media.

STIB’s vice-president, Lofti Mostefa, offered his own remarks: “I have been asked by several people about the possibility of a partnership between STIB and Uber. I do not in any way support this initiative, which is contrary to the societal project that I am working toward. For me, the only possible partners for STIB are Brussels taxis,” he said.

Today, Wednesday 7th of November, Uber drivers were planning to hold a rally in front of the courthouse in Brussels while the hearing concerning them was taking place. However, it was cancelled as the Mayor of Brussels, Philippe Close had not granted the permission.

According to Fernando Redondo, president of the Association belge des chauffeurs limousine, the mobilization has been cancelled. However, he declared that they deplore this decision and are planning to schedule a new rally on November 14.

Mr. Redondo further commented on the importance of this issue as Uber drivers have previously been targeted by several parties, verbally and physically.

The Belgian Federation of Taxis has, in the past, undertaken legal action against Uber drivers. Mr. Redondo stated that the future of 1000 Uber drivers is at stake, as well as that of their families.

Massive planned strikes expected to cause disruptions tomorrow

Should you aim to reach the city centre or the Schuman neighbourhood to go to work on Tuesday, you should consider public transport. It’s not another the car-free day, nor has pollution, but the taxi drivers will go on strike all day long.

This is due to them strongly disagreeing with what Pascal Smet, the Belgian Federal Minister for mobility, had to say about taxis and taxi apps.

The drivers believe his future plan to make the taxi drivers and the Uber drivers almost at the same level with the same rights, is unfair. They are also not in favour of the increase of the numerus clausus, which would make the competition higher and then the prices lower.

After the unions of the taxi drivers met with Mr. Smet last week, they have decided to continue the planned protest. Philippe Lescot, a union representative, told Le Soir there could be “overflows” in roads of the main protests.

The protests will start about 5.00 am on the main routes into Brussels. A cavalcade will also be on the way to/from Zaventem. While it should take multiple hours, the taxi drivers will gather at Plateau du Heysel later in the culmination of the days protest.

These protests are taking place throughout Europe in a show of solidarity. Drivers from France, Switzerland and the UK are supposed to protest in major capitals, too.

The Federation of Belgian Taxi Drivers (FeBet) will protest tomorrow, December 12, starting at 07:00am at Rogier square.

FeBet filed a strike notice following a public declaration by Pascal Smet, Brussels Minister for Mobility and Public Works. The association accuses him of being tolerant towards company Uber, who drivers carry passengers with permits for limousines. In the absence of a Taxi plan, FeBet is calling for amendments to the paid passenger transportation in order to clarify the conditions under which limousine permits can be used. FeBet also calls for more effective control for Uber drivers.
