Have you wondered what are the consequences for failing to stop at a red light in Brussels?

The penalty is 174 euros and it applies to any form of traffic light. This means that going through a red light will cost you 174 euros in Brussels, no matter if you are driving a car, biking or walking.

The police in the Brussels-Capital and Ixelles region are tracking all activities on the street and giving warnings or fines to all those who fail to comply with road traffic regulations.

Infrabel has asked the SNCB to cancel around 100 trains every day heading to and from Brussels from mid-October to mid-November. The SNCB, in turn, has expressed fears that the scale of such cancellations could affect up to 68,000 commuters in the autumn, or one in four Brussels morning rush hour commuters.

More specifically, the Belgian infrastructure managerial organisation has requested that the SNCB not run any trains at peak times (‘P-trains’) to and from Brussels. Infrabel is due to modernise the train infrastructure south of Brussels-Midi station this autumn. According to Infrabel, this “essential” work will require the complete closure of the North-South Brussels junction during the long weekends of 1 and 11 November.

But, to the SNCB’s great surprise, major disruptions are also expected from 14 October to 8 November, with Infrabel intending to close no less than 30% of train traffic at the Brussels South station – a significant reduction.

“We regret once again to learn from the press that Infrabel is making a decision which goes against common sense and without taking into account the impact on travellers,” said Gianni Tabbone, spokesman for the travel association Navetteurs.be. “After the threats of line closures, Infrabel now requires the SNCB to cancel numerous trains for one month to carry out its work without taking into account the impact on 68,000 passengers who already suffer many inconveniences on a daily basis.”

“This measure once again demonstrates the problems of collaboration between SNCB and Infrabel. We cannot accept these train cancellations and ask Infrabel to review its intended policy as a matter of urgency,” added Mr Tabbone.

This opinion is shared by the Flemish commuter association TreinTramBus. “The traveller is once again the victim of communication problems between SNCB and Infrabel,” the association said in a statement.

A final decision on whether the planned cancellations will go ahead will take place in the middle of next month.

The “single ticket” usable for all Brussels public transport operators – Stib, Tec, De Lijn and SNCB – will not be available by the start of the school year. Rather, its availability will have to wait for the formation of the new Belgian governments (Flemish, Walloon and federal).

The single ticket idea, which would allow purchasers to travel freely in the capital and the surrounding area, was announced in January by Jean-Pierre Hansen, Chairman of the RER Steering Committee. The aim is to encourage commuters to leave their vehicles at home and commute via public transport to Brussels without having to pay several subscriptions. Jean-Pierre Hansen had previously specified that the project was to be endorsed by the Executive Committee of Ministers for Mobility (CEMM) a few days later.

However, no CEMM could be organised before the elections. The project is therefore postponed indefinitely.

The four operators have also had previous difficulties agreeing on issues such as pricing and revenue allocation.

Part of the Rue de La Loi will be reduced from four to two lanes from this Monday until the end of August in order to complete the renovation of the bridge located above the chaussée d’Etterbeek, announced Brussels Mobility in a press release on Friday.

“In the summer of 2017, Brussels Mobility began work on renovating the bridge. In 2018, the renovations could not be carried out in the summer due to the festivities commemorating the end of the First World War. This year, the renovation of the bridge will finally be completed,” explains Brussels Mobility. “The objective is to rebuild the infrastructure, waterproofing, balustrades and road surface.”

These works are being completed while major renovation is also being conducted on the Leopold II and Rogier tunnels.

Eurostar trains experienced significant delays on Sunday morning and afternoon at Gare du Midi station due to longer than expected maintenance work on two trains, the company spokeswoman said. On Twitter, dissatisfied travellers shared photos of the long queues at the station.

Due to the delay in maintenance work, the first two trains of the day experienced “significant delays”, causing long queues, explained spokeswoman Stefanie Van Mierlo. One of the two trains, scheduled for 8:52 am, did not leave the station until around 1 pm.

The disruptions in Brussels also caused delays at other stations throughout the day. However, from today (Monday) things have returned to normal.

To make the travel experience of its passengers even more pleasant, Brussels Airport and Manyways.be have launched a specially designed smart city dashboard. The dashboard provides real-time detailed information on all traffic to and from the airport to address the specific needs of everyone who travels via Brussels Airport.

Real-time information thanks to Manyways.be

Manyways.be endeavours to make technical mobility data legible for users without any technical knowledge. Thanks to innovative technology developed at the initiative of the federal government, companies and private individuals can now use ground breaking mobility strategies devised by Waylay and MORE LION.

The Brussels Airport smart city dashboard is geared towards both passengers and commuters. The data are mapped in real time and in a comprehensive way on a dashboard via instant visualization and are supplemented with insightful graphs.

The Brussels Airport Smart City Dashboard

The Brussels Airport Smart City Dashboard charts car, train and bus traffic and shows, in real time, how many cars are driving on the Brussels ring road and at what speed, the availability of different parking facilities at the airport, the availability of carpooling to and from the airport and the punctuality of public transport.

Users can get detailed mobility information of a specific place at the click of a button, while mobile users can always situate themselves on a map. The dashboard is accessible via

From 4 to 7 July, Brussels will host the Grand Départ du Tour de France 2019. During this event, major traffic disruptions are expected. A “mobility plan” has thus been issued by the Tour organisation.

If you have the opportunity, avoid taking the car at all costs! The Tour is expected to attract more than a million visitors, so the city of Brussels will be completely paralysed. In addition, the Leopold II tunnel and Brugmann Avenue will be closed due to construction work. So choose public transport (especially the underground metro), which will be free for the occasion. SNCB has also planned 40 additional trains, both to Brussels and back.

► Click here to discover the Brussels-Mobility website and details of these disruptions

Here is an overview of the expected disruptions:

Thursday, July 4th:

Pentagon affected
Place des Palais closed to traffic

Friday, July 5:

Disruptions due to final preparations

Saturday, July 6:

Route 1st Brussels stage

Sunday, July 7:

Time trial course

On Sunday, the main entrances to Brussels via the motorways will be closed. This includes the A12, E40 and E411. If you absolutely have to drive to Brussels, opt for the Ring and prepare for long queues. Also, don’t count on taking taxis, which will be affected in the same way as cars.

Currently, the Tour’s organisation sends personalised letters to the inhabitants of Brussels. For good reason, it will be forbidden to park in certain spots so that the race can take place as smoothly as possible.

The Leopold II tunnel will be completely closed to traffic day and night from this Friday for two months, as it was at this time last year, in order to continue its renovation. The longest tunnel in the country will reopen on the 2nd of September.

Apart from some work done at night outside the summer months, the summer period is the most favourable period for large construction and renovation projects. The roadway will be completely renewed and the sidewalks renovated. Drainage will be adapted, a new water supply system for firefighters will also be installed and the power supply and ventilation will be changed. The renovation of the ceiling will also continue.

The construction site will undoubtedly cause quite a bit of traffic disruption because nearly 40,000 motorists use this road daily in both directions. Alternatives via the A12 and Boulevard Industriel (Anderlecht) have therefore been put in place.

A secure bicycle path has also been installed on Avenue Charles-Quint between the Zellik road (N8) and the tunnel itself. SNCB, Stib and De Lijn have also adapted their capacity and frequency of their modes of transport accordingly.

Other measures have also been taken to improve traffic flow around the tunnel: a single direction with a traffic lane for cars and another for buses, emergency services and motorcycles is planned around Elisabeth Park. Two exits will also be closed at Place Sainctelette to prevent motorists from blocking each other.
