Number of road casualties involving cyclists increases in Brussels

The semi-annual barometer published by Vias shows that the total number of road casualties in Brussels is not decreasing, unlike in other regions.

According to the Road Safety Barometer – 1st quarter 2019, the number of deaths has decreased slightly in the capital. However, the total number of road casualties is not decreasing, and there is an increase in the number of accidents involving cyclists.

In fact, in total 48 cyclists lost their lives only in the first half of the year in Belgium, which is the highest number ever and it is alarming.

“There is a lot of work to radically improve road safety in Brussels. The number of victims of the road must imperatively decrease. We need to really reinforce both the real road safety and the feeling of safety of the road users .” added Brussels’ Transport Minister Elke Van den Brandt.
