Identities and communities: For a new European social contract
The motto of the European Union is “united in diversity” but its expression in real life is not simple. Over the last twenty years, the concept of multiculturalism has been criticized in both the political and academic spheres, represented as a threat to national identity. The attempt to build a “European community” is also perceived by many as a threat to the “national community” or the nation-state.
The concept of identity has become more complex. Today, with the Internet, identity becomes more mobile and communities transcend national borders. Migration flows reinforce this idea. Many questions arise about new forms of identities and communities that emerge. We will address these issues in the panel:
Why is multiculturalism often not perceived as a social enrichment? Is the role played by the state different from that played by civil society? Is the secret of living together in a multicultural society to engage in dialogue between communities?
In addition, the European Union has created a community based on laws and values. Is it realistic or desirable to go beyond this legal sphere and strengthen cultural ties between different countries?
