Brussels determined to fight the proliferation of pigeons

The Brussels authorities are becoming increasingly concerned about the number of pigeons in the city.

At the last pigeon count back in 2004, 4,500 pairs of the bird were estimated to be living within the city limits.  This figure, however, has increased since then, largely as a result of improved feeding opportunities.

To address the problem, the Brussels authorities are developing a coordinated action plan across the different municipalities.

In particular, the environment and energy administration in the Brussels-Capital Region, Bruxelles Environnement, has recommended installing dovecotes in different locations across the city, and regulating the pigeon birth rate by replacing eggs with snares. It has also emphasised that feeding the birds is prohibited in the city parks.
