Retratos Cruzados (Crossed Portraits) – Inauguration of Photo Project by Instituto Cervantes and Gaceta Holandesa
The Eighty Years’ War, or War of Flanders as it is referred to in Spanish, constitutes a key historical link between Spain and Flanders as well as being a particularly important period in their history. The war resulted in a long process of conflict and distancing between both territories and their inhabitants. Nonetheless, the Spaniards and the peoples of the so called Low Countries still crossed paths and they interacted in everyday situations in both territories.
This exhibition aims to celebrate these close historical links and migratory flows between both territories by presenting a contemporary collection of crossed portraits of Spanish nationals living in the Netherlands and Belgium and of Dutch and Flemish Belgians living in Spain. These modern-day protagonists are evidence of a shared history and of a common present and future.
For nearly two decades, photographer Alicia Fernández Solla has been portaying spaces and people in both the Netherlands and Spain. She is a member of various platforms for artists and is co-founder, along with Alejandra Mahiques Núñez, of the weekly magazine Gaceta Holandesa, coverning Dutch culture and current affairs for a Spanish-speaking readership.
The event will be held mainly in Spanish and English
Followed by a light cocktail – vino español
