EXPO 2017: Future Energy Debate in Central Asia

On November 22, 2012, Astana was chosen by the International Exhibitions Bureau (BIE) to host the Universal Expo in 2017. Four years later here we are in Astana.  

2017 will undoubtedly go down as a momentous year in the history of Kazakhstan. In January, the country took up its seat on the United Nations Security Council, the first time a Central Asian nation has given such a responsibility. Now Kazakhstan’s capital faces the challenge of delivering a successful EXPO 2017 under the theme ‘Future Energy‘. The aim is to generate a global debate, during 3 months, between 115 countries, 22 non-governmental organisations, companies and the general public on crucial questions. Throughout three months, those stakeholders will try to answer to the following question: how do we ensure safe and sustainable access to energy for all while reducing Co2 emissions?

Astana is ready

Kazakhstan is blessed with a rich abundance of natural ressources. The country is a major global exporter of oil and gas, as well as uranium and other rare earth metals. So, some may be surprised that Astana is hosting a major event that is dedicated to renewable energy. “Kazakhstan sees no contradiction between supplying today’s energy needs while also being committed and to development of sustainable and cleaner energy that will benefit future generations. The two are not mutually exclusive in our progressive vision” explained Asset Issekeshev, Mayor of Astana. “This event has a major role to play in Kazakhstan’s goal of becoming one of the world’s top 30 global economies by 2050. The Expo will also act as a catalyst for tourism to Kazakhstan by giving the opportunity for visitors from near and far to experience Astana for the first time.” he concluded.

Innovation

This Expo is the opportunity for major international players to present their new technologies. As an example, France presents today a futuristic electric Peugeot. “We were one of the first countries in the European Union that signed a strategic partnership agreement with Kazakhstan. The theme chosen by Kazakhstan for this exhibition is the same as the priorities we support in our country. Renewable energy sources, eco-city and eco-transport are the three main themes of our pavilion.” explained Pascal Lorot, French Commissioner for the Expo 2017.

“Each partner has a dedicated zone to demonstrate their interactive elements with tactile screens and recent developments. There is a separate section dedicated to all kinds of future transport, from electric scooters to electric cars. The main exhibit is a completely new project of Peugeot: an electric car with a futuristic designed that can be especially appealing to children” he concluded. 

The French pavilion will celebrate the two national holidays  here in Astana: Fête de la Musique on June 21 and Bastille Day on July 14. You should visit the French pavilion on those days.
