Additional €1.6m for the completion of Brussels pedestrian scheme

€1.6m in additional spending has been set aside to speed-up the completion of the Brussels’ pedestrian scheme, in particular between Place Fontainas and Rue des Riches Claires.

The scheme aims to open the central boulevard and encourage shoppers to the area by closing it to traffic. However, the scheme has been roughly implemented so far and the shops and restaurants in this area have said the scheme has hit business.

Local politician Christian Ceux said, “It’s really too bad that Brussels residents have to pay twice but also, speeding-up the project will be at the expense of quality. We’ll see where we are in six months.

When completed, this would give Brussels the second biggest pedestrian scheme in Europe (after Venice).
