“Brussels : A safe haven?” shows how the Belgian capital was gradually transformed into “world-city” it is today, with 180 nationalities.
More than 180 nationalities are now living in Brussels.
Beyond the figures, each of these people has a personal history, and hope. Since 1830, various waves of immigration have succeeded one another. Why did these men and women leave their country? Has Brussels been a safe haven for them?
This exhibition tells how the Belgian capital has gradually grown into the “world-city” it is today. It traces the journey of these foreigners who settled in Brussels for a few months or indefinitely, through the objects they took with them, their personal testimonies and family photographs.
Aside from this historical section, the exhibition also presents the work of emerging artists based in Brussels (photographers, street artists, sculptors, video makers) who tackle the issue of migration and cultural diversity in Brussels today.
