One of our favorite Brussels’ Summer Activities, Hello Summer, is bringing this year a lot of small events that the City of Brussels has prepared for its inhabitants. In compliance with security measures, very diverse activities will take place in different places and target a variety of audiences offering a generous and qualitative program for everyone to enjoy.

The activities include: different concerts, live art, events on terraces, cinema under the stars, events in museums, ‘carte blanche’ for festivals, theatre for children, and many more.

These events will be taking place at various locations in Brussels (Laeken, Neder-Over-Heembeek, Square Ambiorix, the esplanade of the Cité Administrative at the Congress Column, the Vaux-Hall at the Brussels Park,…).

Until August 30, there will be plenty of choice to celebrate the Brussels summer together! You can find all the necessary details on their website.

Enjoy and don’t forget to be careful and wear your mask.

This Sunday, 22nd of September, will take place the annual Car Free Day in Brussels. From 9.30 am to 7 pm the circulation of all cars will be forbidden, except for public transports, taxis, coaches, rescue services, public utility vehicles, diplomatic corps, disabled people and cars with a special pass (that has to be requested before the 19thof September at the municipal administration). In any case, the speed limit will be of 30 km/h. Bicycles and scooters will be free to circulate as well, while electric bicycles that can reach the 45 km/h will have to obtain an exemption.

Unlike official taxis, Uber vehicles won’t be able to circulate in the city: “A few weeks ago, we communicated to the Uber drivers that they won’t be able to circulate on Sunday, unless they’ll be in possession of a specific authorization,” explained the spokesman of Brussels Mobility, Camille Thiry, to La Capitale.

Public transports

As every year, the STIB will offer its services for free. Anyway, since its buses will have to circulate, like all the other vehicles, at 30 km/h the timetable cannot be respected.

De Lijn buses will be free, as well, for all the rides within the 19 communes of Brussels.

For those who don’t live in Brussels, but want to reach the capital by train, the SNCB propose a Mobility Ticket. For that day, it will be possible to travel in Belgium with no limits for just 6 euros.

Parking

In case you prefer to come to Brussels by car, all the entrances to the city will remain open to permit the vehicles to reach the six car parks available. All car parks will be free for the occasion, except for parking C of Heysel (10 euros all day) , and for the car park in the Westland Shopping Center (5 euros all day).

The other car parks available (with limited capacity) are:

Parking Stalle

Parkings UCL sur le site de Bruxelles Woluwe

Parking Brico Plan-t

Parking Ceria

Activities

The day is also going to be full of activities to celebrate and sensitize on the topic of mobility.

At Place Royale, Place des Palais e Parc Royale, will take place the event Bucolic Brussels. Between 10 am and 7 pm it will be possible to find food trucks, brewers, children’s activities, shows, artisans, associations and much more.

At place De Brouckère, it will be set the “Mobilxmix Village” where it will be possible to have a scooter ride and receive some knowledge about road safety.

As for every year, the STIB is going to open the doors of its deposit in Ixelles between 10 am and 4 pm.

Finally, it will be possible for runners to participate to the 20 km of Brussels but… upside down. In fact, the race will follow the opposite direction of the official 20 km.

To know all the activities organized in the 19 communes of Brussels Region visit the website of the Mobility Week.

After last year’s successful edition, HUNGAstRY Festival will take place again in 2019. Let’s enjoy and discover the Hungarian feeling, music, games, art productions, artisanal products and gastronomy in the heart of Brussels!

On the 29th and 30th of June the city will host Hungastry, the second edition of the Hungarian Festival, organised by the Permanent Representation of Hungary to the European Union! It enhances the Hungarian culture, history and traditions and it will introduce you to its surprises and hidden treasures. It will take place at the Cinquantenaire Park.

The festival will be a great opportunity to spend some time in one of Brussels’ best parks with friends and family: there will be several different options for the youngest, as well as for the adults!

For the fourteenth year in a row, the festival Courants d’airs (“Airflow Festival”) is coming to the Belgian capital. It will run from April 24 to 28, and will feature more than 330 young artists from the Royal Brussels Conservatory and other art schools performing more than 50 shows, concerts and other artistic productions, all of which the public will be able to watch free of charge.

“Every year, Courants d’airs offers students both a free space to be creative as well as the opportunity to experience the realities of a professional career in the arts. However, above all it encourages the mixing of different genres and arts,” explains president and founder of the festival, Pierre-Moïse Pivin.

This year, theater, music, dance, the circus and opera are the art forms being honoured. Performances will be held at the Royal Brussels Conservatory, at the Brussels Parliament (where a performance of “The Tragedy of Carmen” will take place on April 25 and 26 in the Ice Hall), at the Free University of Brussels, and at the Grand-Place.

The festival will open on April 24 at 8:00 pm in the Royal Brussels Conservatory’s Main Hall. It will bring together more than 60 students from over 10 different countries and from several different conservatories (Ghent, Brussels, Liege and Geneva), who together will be performing Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 4.

A unique project called “Waffle Time”, which (according to the festival’s program) “combines juggling, circus and waffle making”, will also take place on April 26th and 28th at the Royal Brussels Conservatory, and at the Grand-Place on April 27th.

In addition to the young artists from the Royal Brussels Conservatory, the festival will involve students from the Institute of Arts of Broadcasting (IAD), the Arts² school, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels (ARbA-EsA), the Higher Institute of Arts (Insas), La Cambre, Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel (KCB) and the Higher Institute of Arts and Choreography of Brussels (Isac).

Water kettles, portable heaters and lamps. All simple electrical devices that you can find in almost every home in Belgium. They’re easy use and even easier to break. But did you know that 60% of broken appliances can be easily fixed?

Refugee youth as part of SB Espoir learned this surprising fact and how to do simple fixes of electrical devices through a workshop with Repair Café. On a brisk Saturday morning, the youth and volunteers assembled at the Repair Café workshop in Ixelles.

With the help of the technicians at Repair Café, the volunteers and youth were taught and practiced strategies on how to diagnose a problem and techniques of repair. Our first task was to fix a portable heater, and we did! Well, with the guidance of the technicians but we used the tips and tricks that we learned, we would determine if an item was fixable and then looking at the best options to fix it.

The youth and volunteers had the opportunity to try soldering wires to circuit boards, using an ohm meter, removing broken switchboxes, among other useful techniques.

Repair Café is a part of the Repair Together movement and the Repair Café International Network, all working towards promoting the repair and reuse of appliances, electrical devices, and other fixable items. They support the principle of reducing waste and second-hand sales and exchanges.

This Repair Café in particular works with Les Petits Riens to repair donated appliances and electrical devices that are then resold in the Les Petits Riens shops.

The volunteers and youth fixed about 10 items that will be sold at the Les Petitis Riens shop in Ixelles at Rue Americaine.

These kinds of partnerships with the local community in Brussels exposes the youth to learn about different life skills and opportunities for their future.

Night Fever. Designing club culture

Clubs and nightclubs are the epicentres of pop culture. Ever since the 1960s, these are the venues where groundbreakers have challenged norms and created alternative realities. As a result, many nightclubs have developed into full-blown modern works of art, with an unprecedented blend of interior architecture and design in their furnishings, art and graphic prints, lighting and music, fashion and performance. Night fever. ‘Designing Club Culture 1960 – Today’ is the first exhibition devoted to an exhaustive international history of nightclub design and culture.

Foodies alert: drink, taste and eat your way through these three cute and tasty museums for a very reasonable price.

Schaerbeek Museum of Beer

The small Museum of Beer is located in the workshop of a former school. It is surrounded by a beautiful garden. This inconspicuous place gives you a taste of the famous beer called Schaerbeekoise, which is unique and not available anywhere else.

Its scenography shows the various states of beer production and a collection of around 2000 beer bottles, many of them are accompanied by their brand glass.

The museum encourages you to approach the history of brewing such as: old beer-making machines, coopers’ tools, pub and beer signs, various publicity materials and even documents from former or existing breweries.

Cheers!

The Belgian Chocolate Village

The Belgian Chocolate Village (BCV) is one of the largest museums dedicated to chocolate. It covers more than 900 m². The tour shows the history of chocolate, its culture and production, the associated benefits for health. It appeals to all the visitors’ senses through different activities being held in the museum.

The permanent exhibition displays chocolate sculptures made by Belgian chocolatiers: the Atomium, the Cinquantenaire, as well as Greek mythological creatures made of chocolate. You can also witness the creative process of making chocolate by a local artisan chocolatier.

There is also a tropical greenhouse, an indoor orangery with cacao trees and other exotic plants. Finally, there is a boutique where chocolate lovers can buy handmade chocolate from all around Belgium.

Mmm!

Brussels Museum of the Mill and Food

The museum is a National Heritage building, located in an old mill. The permanent exhibition shows the milling process, milling techniques, its milling history and energy use. The exhibition is completely changed each year to highlight different aspects of food.

This year the museum holds the exhibition ‘Kids menu. A big history of little eaters.’

It’s all about the way children are fed from the time they are babies and onward. Moreover, the exhibition tries to compare Belgian cultural heritage with other cultures. The theme is covered by explanatory texts, period objects, photographs, archival documents from various Belgian and foreign collections. It is presented with the help of dynamic display. It also explains the children’s appetite for sweets and fast food.

Bon appetit!
