From today, the municipality of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre will implement bicycle couriers three times a week to receive and deliver the official mail of the municipality. The couriers will deliver important administrative documents necessary for the proper functioning of a municipality such as planning permissions, budget documents, documents addressed to municipal councilors etc.

The socially responsible eco-cooperative Molenbike will take care of the business. A trial period of three months is planned, in order to ensure that the couriers will be able to deliver all the official documents in time.

So far, all the official documents were deposited by car. Thus, the municipality has taken this measure in order to reduce the impact on air quality and mobility in Brussels.

The usage of these heaters had already been prohibited in the district of Avenue Georges Henri. This measure was taken initially for aesthetic reasons and to preserve the architectural aspect of the avenue.

However, the alderwoman explains now the environmental reason behind this decision. She adds that the consumption of four of these heaters during 8 hours is equivalent to traveling 350 km by car. Moreover, it is a heresy to heat the outside space and also a complete waste.

The activities that will take place on 14 and 15 September center around the theme « A place for art ».

If you are willing to give up your car you can get a bonus of 1,500 euros.

Starting from July 1, inhabitants of Woluwe Saint-Lambert could give up their license plate in order to get the bonus. The bonus is spread out over five years, upon fulfillment of certain conditions. Most importantly you can only benefit if you remain a resident of the municipality for at least five years.

Moreover, you get an extra bonus of 50 euros each year if you actually destroy your car instead of re-selling it.

Now, it is harvest time in their wheat field. With the heat of the last few days, the association’s volunteers got up early to mow during the cooler hours of the day. Especially since they work on the “Flemish sappe”, a traditional tool similar to the sickle.

After being sorted and threshed, the grains pass between the millstones of the Woluwe-Saint-Lambert windmill, located a few hundred meters from the plot. The breads can then be baked in a traditional oven not far from the Hof Ter Musschen’s farm.

The field is located on Sint-Stevens-Woluwe, but they have set up a collaboration with the Commune of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert to cultivate a plot of land next to the windmill from 2019.

The goal? Prepare a homemade bread at the beginning of the process. The association also organizes training courses to make bakery at home according to the ancestral method. The Hof Ter Musschen bakery is located at the corner of boulevard de la Woluwe and avenue Hippocrate.

To celebrate the occasion, the Embassy of Peru to the Kingdom of Belgium and to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, organized a reception in the beautiful premises of the Château Malou, an historic building guarded by the green and forested areas of Woluwe Saint Lambert.

The event took place on July 18th and Ambassador Gonzalo Gutiérrez Reinel welcomed the more than two hundred guests who raised their glasses to celebrate the 198th anniversary of the noble nation of Peru.

During his speech, Ambassador Gutiérrez underlined the path of economic growth Peru continues to experience. Innovation and private investment have been nourished in what is an open economy to the whole world. Peru continues to invest in its human capital and adapting international standards that would allow the implementation of best practices to increase the level of democratic engagement among its citizens. The fight against corruption and the reduction of poverty continue to be addressed through important reforms.

Regarding the close relationship with Kindgom of Belgium, Ambassador Gutierrez said, “I have the pleasure to announce that Belgian scientists will be on board of Peru’s oceanographic expeditionary ships to Antarctica.”

Along with other members of the Pacific Alliance —Mexico, Colombia, and Chile, with whom he had been in Luxembourg, Namur and Ghent — Ambassador Gutiérrez reiterated the growing interest among entrepreneurs to fully explore the investment possibilities in Peru.

You will find parks of all types and sizes all over Brussels. But rarely will you come across one that has a centuries-old château in it with a history both dark and fascinating.

Today, we take you to Parc Malou, the oldest and biggest park in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, a municipality in the eastern side of the Brussels region.

The park covers eight hectares of green space with a chain of ponds and four recreational areas. The site was first mentioned in a document written in the 12th century when feudal lords occupied the village.

The first thing we see is a large pond encircled by a trail. As we stroll around the pond, a magnificent building of neoclassical features comes into view. Welcome to Château Malou, one of the treasures of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert.

It looks just like the setting of a romantic 18th century period movie. An immaculate white château on a hill surrounded by trees. A cobblestoned courtyard on one side and a lawn descending unto a pond on the other.

But there’s more to Château Malou than meets the eye. The manor house built in 1776 is also full of history. 

A château with a story to tell 

The story begins in the 17th century when the park was a rural domain belonging to an aristocrat by the name of Albert Preudhomme who builds a hunting lodge in the middle of the estate.

Enormous debt forces Preudhomme to sell the property in 1654. It is eventually acquired by the Jesuits who turn the place into a retreat house. The religious congregation will run the estate for about a century.

But religious politics would soon trigger a change of ownership in the 18th century. At this time, the growing influence of the Jesuits is becoming a threat to the Catholic Church. In 1773, the Vatican dissolves the Jesuits and banishes them from the property.

A banker named Lambert de Lamberts becomes the next proprietor of the estate. In 1776, the hunting lodge is replaced with the two-storey château we see today. Upon the death of Lamberts, the property is sold to politician Charles-Louis Kessel.

After Kessel, a man of notorious reputation takes ownership of the estate in 1829. Pierre van Gobbelschroy was a prominent leader under the French and the Dutch regimes. His political career ends in disgrace after Belgium gains independence in 1830.

The darkest event in the history of the château takes place in 1850 when Gobbelschroy succumbs to financial ruin and takes his own life. But better days would overturn the tragic events when the property becomes the home of a politician well loved by the Belgians.

Who was Malou?

The château was named after Jules Malou who owned the property from 1853 until his death in 1886.

Unlike his predecessor, Malou was a popular politician who twice served as Prime Minister of Belgium. And unlike all the previous owners of the estate, he showed a certain dedication to Woluwe-Saint-Lambert and its residents.

A member of the Catholic Party, Malou initiated several projects in the municipality including the construction of a Catholic school for girls in 1879.

The property of Malou was passed on to his descendants until 1952 when it was turned over to the municipality. Since the 1970s, the château and the surrounding park have undergone several renovations.

Today, Château Malou is one of the very few manor houses in Belgium that anyone can visit. The historic building is now a center for cultural activities, art exhibits, conferences, and weddings.
