Empowering refugee women to make their own choices, their own future

Project development and communications officer for SB OverSeas shares our newest pilot project, doing empowerment activities with asylum-seeking women and girls in Brussels.

After years of experience working with youth in different centers with youth, we noticed that since the majority of asylum seekers are male, fewer resources are dedicated to women & girls, whom often require specialised support. We soon realized there is a gap in women-oriented programs to cover areas such as social inclusion and personal growth since reason why we decided something had to be done.

After months of planning and learning about women’s needs we created SB OverSeas new project: “Son Choix Son Avenir” (her choices, her future) a project that will focus on promoting social inclusion, personal development and access of opportunities. We will promote practical life skills and vocational training through  career workshops among other activities to prepare them for a future job or to continue their education. We will also engage in in self-awareness, leadership and self-esteem as well as physical wellness and health programs. This will create a safe space for dialogue between the women, girls and our volunteers for of mutual support, a key to rebuilding community.

On Sunday April 14, 2019 we had the opportunity to do our first activity at the  Croix-Rouge de Belgique center in Jette, the activity theme was “sa santé, son avenir” we talked about healthy eating, made together granola and decorated jars for the granola that the women and our volunteers took home. We hope this will be the first of many activities yet to come to #GiveHope and #GiveFuture to refugee women in Belgium.

If you want to help fund our new project you can do so by making a donation or purchasing one of our products, and help us empower women and girls for their choice, their future.
