Manneken Pis: several hundreds demonstrate against locking up children

A crowd of several hundreds of people occupied the streets around Manneken Pis in Brussels on Wednesday night. They were protesting against the confinement of a family in the new residential units in the closed center 127bis in Steenokkerzeel. The action was an initiative of the collective #NotInMyName.

The demonstrators expressed their solidarity with the imprisoned family and their dissatisfaction with politics in Belgium. They chanted for minutes ‘On enferme pas un enfant’, followed by ‘Nous sommes tous des enfants d’immigrés’ followed.

The demonstration around Manneken Pis was symbolic because the urinating boy is the only child in Belgium who can be locked behind bars.

“There is nothing that justifies locking people up, and certainly not minors. That is why we are mobilizing here, so that this unseen measure can not simply pass by in the middle of summer,” said a spokesperson for the collective #NotInMyName.
