World Cup 2018: Germany

Before the 2018 World Cup starts in Moscow next June 14, Brussels Express will present all EU national teams involved in the competition. Chapter VII: Germany.

“Le football est un jeu qui se joue à onze, et à la fin c’est l’Allemagne qui gagne“. “Football is a game with 11 players and Germany wins at the end”. That French motto is a good way to describe the German team during the 2014 World Cup. In 2014, Germany indeed seemed unbeatable and their semi-finals match vs. Brazil will always be remembered in the history of football (7-1).

The German team is definitely one of the favourite ones to win the 2018 World Cup. It is still 1st at the FIFA World ranking and Germany won all the 10 games it played in the qualifying rounds. Only a few teams have won the cup twice in a row, but will Germany do it?

Key player: Manuel Neuer

Who is the best goalkeeper of the World? A year ago, there was absolutely no doubt about this issue. Manuel Neuer was indeed impressive over the last couple of years as  he led Germany during the last World Cup victory.

He was however injured from September to May, and his participation was still uncertain few weeks ago. Although Ter Stegen is used to playing for FC Barcelona, Manuel Neuer’s leadership has never been questioned.

Let’s have a look at the upcoming games, to check whether Neuer will play. If so, let’s see if he can perform as good as he used to before the injury.
